I am excited to be sharing a year’s long project in a PreK classroom. I hope to see you Friday at 1:30!

As the baseball playoffs continue, this post might be an idea to consider using baseball as a context for a math task with younger students. https://t.co/kWQD1sPhGs

The baseball playoffs and World Series are here. Numbers on uniforms, runs scored, balls and strikes, innings, tickets that tell customers where to sit, batting averages… there is so much mat…

Help please. Counting by 9s, I see if I start at 4 and count 4 hops, I get to 4 tens or 40. If I start at 13, and hop 13 hops, I get to 13 tens or 130. Same with 22 and 22 hops- 22 tens or 220. Can you help me think about why? #choralcounting @BerkeleyEverett @jody_guarino

Hello! I’m excited to be at CMC-South sharing about choral counting in PreK! Come join us for counting, video, and planning!

I’ve had the opportunity to think about coaching with Marta and Polly. They bring an amazing depth of knowledge and thoughtfulness to their work. I’m excited to attend their session!

So excited to be at NCTM! I’d love to think with you about community- based tasks! We will look at and use stats from the Diamondbacks/Phillies playoff games, perhaps an inspiration for a task with the upcoming World Series data! # NCTMDC2023

PreK #choralcount. I wondered if they would notice 100 has 3 digits. They noticed a pattern counting 1,2,3,4…to 10 in the tens place on the 3rd & 4th rows. And 1 student said counting by 20s on each row. And more…#trinitylearns

After viewing a live jar with 3D shapes in it, PreK made predictions. They decided that 8 and 10 were both the closest to the number- if you have 10 & take 1 away or have 8 & put 1 more, you get 9. #trinitylearns

During this PreK choral count there were lots of patterns noticed. And that the 1st column counted by 5s. Then a student decided that the 2nd column counted by 6, next one counted by 7…. We used cubes to investigate, and he stood fast in his own opinion. #trinitylearns

These PreK students used @Trianglemancsd shapes as part of their representation of the water cycle! #trinitylearns

PreK choral count! A student said you need 9 to get from 10 to 15! We used cubes to see. Then learned 5 more to get to 20. Used noticed patterns to know that the missing number was 33. Said 1st row counted by 5s but no others. Really saw number patterns! #trinitylearns

I felt your nudge, @TracyZager to use a live jar. PreK did. There were more predictions, more number range, and then we reflected after about how close our less and more than were to the actual count. #trinitylearns

In PreK we took a leap! We compared 2 choral counts from previous weeks. I chose two that were almost the same numbers but recorded differently. Some previously recorded noticings gave us some of the ideas for comparing. #trinitylearns

Shapes, balance, counting….
Pre-K kids estimated, counted and reasoned about quantity as we read this classic tale. After, they stacked #patternblocks like caps on the peddle’s head and counted how many till they fell over.

PreK snapped cubes together to make a tower as tall as the elephant, built towers as tall as that tower, counted how many, and tried not to Crash Boom! #trinitylearns

Estimation jar in PreK. “There are 10 cubes because I see 7 & 3 are hiding”. “ I think there are 6 playdoh & 5 is less than 6 so 6 is a number too low”. #trinitylearns
