Important insights regarding ongoing Trump/Abbott harm to UT, which for nearly 150 years has "power[ed] the city’s and state’s economy, attracting innovators...Today, however, UT is being dismantled piece by piece. Those who see higher education as a threat are intervening

Mayor @KirkPWatson said the state’s approach amounted to a “show of force.” While it may push people to move, it’s unlikely to help them find stable housing. “What you're getting at the state level is short-term action for a long-term issue,” Watson said. https://t.co/L4DyPGc9ao

Gov. Greg Abbott said Tuesday state officials had cleared 48 camps and arrested 24 individuals across Austin. The disclosure came a day after the city launched a similar initiative.

@UTAustin won't say whether it will accept a compact w/ the Trump admin in exchange for federal funding benefits — becoming the only college offered the deal to not publicly respond. 7/9 rejected it & Vanderbilt hasn't signed but is open to discussion. https://t.co/Lc2YWWLj0w

New: The government does not track how often immigration agents hold Americans. So ProPublica did. We found more than 170 such incidents since the start of the second Trump administration.

"It makes me angry that our prosecutors have refused to consider that the previous prosecutors got this case wrong," a juror writes. "Based on all that has come out since the trial, I am 100% certain that Robert Roberson did not murder his child." https://t.co/huhEnCNWCX

On Thursday, the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals granted a stay of execution for Robert Roberson, whose murder conviction was based on 'shaken baby syndrome.'

A proposed $300 tax hike from Austin, a $200 tax hike from Travis County, another $64 from Central Health. With several entities asking the same taxpayers for more $, why aren’t they talking about their cumulative impact on taxpayers? Latest for @statesman

The Austin City Council is slated to vote Oct. 9 to buy a site at I-35 near Oltorf St for a homeless services center, but officials still lack key details of the safety plan neighbors deserve. @statesman Editorial Board urges a delay to get things right: https://t.co/lJlxniwCTM

Austin should take time to craft a clear plan before committing $4.4M to a new homeless services site, the Statesman Editorial Board writes.

"And that's what I've been warning my fellow Democrats for the past decade," Jonathan Zimmerman writes in @statesman. "We have fueled our own brand of censorship, via social media mobs and public shaming. ... People walk in fear and bite their tongues." https://t.co/vZvOz9q4DH

From cancel culture on the left to censorship on the right, free speech won’t survive without a bipartisan cease-fire, Jonathan Zimmerman writes.

"Enough is enough. Texas must allow faculty and college students to explore freely the breadth of human knowledge, and administrators must support us in that time-honored quest," a UT professor writes in @statesman re: recent firing of Texas A&M professor: https://t.co/W3JU7zaaYr

Enough with the "gotcha" attacks like the recent firing of a Texas A&M instructor. Let professors teach. Let students learn, writes Pauline Turner Strong.

My favorite thought in this @statesman guest column: “As Thomas Jefferson wrote, progress under the Constitution should advance ‘hand in hand with the progress of the human mind.’” On that note: I heart ❤️ the Constitution.

For decades, Austin district officials have largely avoided a comprehensive overhaul of its attendance boundaries and sweeping school closures. Now, officials say fiscal necessity has forced action. Important reporting by @statesman's @HeathKeri: https://t.co/Od350dmQ3T

McCaul's retirement continues the drain of the Texas delegation's tenure and clout in Congress. Besides McCaul, only four of Texas' 25 Republicans in the U.S. House predate Trump's first term: John Carter (sworn in: 2003) Randy Weber ('13) Roger Williams ('13) Brian Babin ('15)

If only the state had something for flood relief, maybe a fund for rainy days, that they could have tapped to help. Ah well, nevertheless
TWO VIEWS 🧵: Citing the July 5 floods, Travis County commissioners are looking at using disaster provision to raise property taxes higher than they otherwise could w/o voter approval. So far, Travis has spent $18.5 million on flood response. The tax hike would raise $42 million.
