Fractal Cities: Hannovers Tetrominoes & New Blog! https://t.co/zNz34v7neX I'm closing this r&d project of visualising different methods of showing cityscape expansion with this little viz of the Mitte district in Hannover getting built up with tetrominoes. #3d #map #animation

Working on globes I'm constantly reminded of the 'lie of maps'. Thanks @kennethfield for thought provoking @bcsmaps lecture. The top 30Β° the most commonly distorted on world maps. So I made a pair of pieces that show the Arctic and Antarctic coast same scale as my HOME map

I wanted to do downtown Denver with the convention center where GeoWeek is being held on my 3D card, so I tried the thing where you rip google geometries from a GPU injection process, but I can't get it to clip (bool) to a hex properly. I think it's because of the way it tiles.

Fractal Cities - New York City Technically one of the hardest animations I've created, I lost a few weekends to it & gave up a few times but pleased I persisted. It shows the animation of buildings in NYC *roughly* by their construction age from ~1850 - 2020. #3d #map #dataviz

Wow, along with short haul flights ... France is really knocking it out of the park. Meanwhile in the UK ...

Paris just announced plans to ban private cars in the city centre. Don't let anyone tell you it can't be done. Congestion is not inevitable, pollution is not inevitable, climate chaos is not inevitable. #ActOnClimate #climate #energy #ItCanBeDone #GreenNewDeal

I don’t know who needs to hear this but Neil Diamond, who retired from performing five years ago because of Parkinsons, just had a Broadway show of him open and it at the opening night he did this

More experiments in data visualization in #Blender3d! Plotting 100k stars within 1000 light-years of the Sun. Thanks to @CgFigures tutorials for showing how to bring data into Blender. I love seeing the faint shape of the Milky Way emerge in the brighter more distant stars!

- road polygons could be converted to paths and a Bevel depth added - building polygons could be extruded on the z-axis to give depth - a point mesh (bars and pubs) can be used as an input to #Blender #GeometryNodes

4. Load the shapefile into #Blender with the #BlenderGIS plugin 5. Have fun with the geometry and materials...

1. In #QGIS, create a bounding box for the area you're interested in 2. Use the #QuickOSM plugin to download the #OpenStreetMap features 3. create a #ShapeFile using "Export->Save Features As..."

Finally Day 23 - Movement was a project I'd been working on in the back background for much of this year... #raspberrypi availability was a challenge but I really enjoyed animating local AIS ship movements #30DayMapChallenge #python #Blender

Day 19 - Globe. I wanted to create a globe animation for a while, essentially create arcs around a sphere. The maths is interesting: plotting a point on a sphere is basic trig, creating a 3d arc between two points took a few attempts until I found #blender's slerp()... Easy!
