We ultimately provide a more coherent understanding of entrepreneurial universities that reconciles existing work and provides a springboard for further research on this increasingly important phenomenon. 10/12

Our model serves as a diagnostic tool for thinking systematically about entrepreneurial universities. The approach can be applied in different national and institutional contexts beyond this study. 9/12

The practical implications are important for university managers and policymakers. Appreciating the knock-on effects between different activities and missions can help mitigate risks and optimise strategies for universities, and re-think funding models and policy evaluation. 8/12

For future research, new methodological approaches are needed to operationalise this systemic view of entrepreneurial universities. This includes harmonising datasets to get a comprehensive picture and using complex systems approaches such as #ABM, #SD, and #networks. 7/12

This highlights important trade-offs and unintended consequences that can arise from policies or initiatives aimed at making universities more entrepreneurial (e.g., resource allocation, partnerships rather than ad-hoc interactions) and managing nested university ecosystems. 6/12

Using causal loop diagrams, our model captures the interconnectedness between universities' entrepreneurial efforts like technology transfer, spin-offs, industry partnerships, etc. and their dynamic capabilities to engage externally. 5/12

Our paper provides a systemic model for diagnosing the capabilities of entrepreneurial universities based on in-depth qualitative and quantitative research. We propose a new, holistic way of understanding how entrepreneurial universities behave and develop. 4/12

In other words: we are, in effect, not seeing the forest for the trees. This risks missing the bigger picture of how entrepreneurial activities and universities' capabilities influence each other within wider (eco)systems. 3/12

Premise: existing research focuses on individual activities or institutions in isolation. Therefore, we have a variety of unit theories of constituent parts of the entrepreneurial university without considering the wider (feedback) effects and implications. 2/12
