Using a sample of eligible voters within #Kenya, @bethewhitaker & @bethiamswellman explore diaspora efforts to influence #elections through the perspectives of domestic #voters - often overlooked in literature on diaspora voting. @unccharlotte @uofmemphis

Our dual survey results suggest that roughly one of every seven eligible voters in Kenya was encouraged to vote by citizens abroad, a remarkably high level of transnational mobilization. The diaspora's indirect influence may have more electoral impact than their votes. 5/6

We also wanted to know how diaspora citizens may indirectly influence elections back home by encouraging their contacts to vote (@MPaarlberg's work). So we asked whether people sent/received remittances, as well as if those people sent/received messages about the election. 4/6

We found that while both domestic and diaspora Kenyans agree that emigrants should be able to vote for president, domestic voters are much less supportive of diaspora participation in sub-national elections. But here's where it gets interesting... 3/6

Re: Diaspora voting, Beth and I often get asked "But what do domestic citizens think?" So we ran parallel surveys of domestic and diaspora Kenyans before the 2022 presidential election polling them on preferences over diaspora voting policies, as well as intended vote choice. 2/6

The findings here suggest that perceived opportunities created by living near a border tend to outweigh perceived risks. Insights from the African context can help us better understand the politics of borders and borderlands around the world. (4/5)

This project has its roots in my dissertation research in Tanzania in the 1990s. Tanzanians living in border areas recognized both benefits and costs of hosting refugees from Rwanda, Burundi, and DRC, while those farther away focused only on the negative impact. (3/5)

This finding holds when accounting for having co-ethnics across the border, liking immigrant neighbors, and living near a refugee camp. To better investigate the mechanisms, I recently collected original survey data from a representative sample in Kenya. Stay tuned! (2/5)

I am excited to announce the publication of my @afrobarometer Working Paper. Using geocoded survey data from 32 African countries, I find that people living closer to an international border are more likely to support free movement across borders. (1/5)

Abstract How does proximity to an international border influence attitudes toward the free movement of people in Africa? Often conceptualised as barriers, borders also represent opportunities...
