Something many of us find bizarre in politics today is how political opponents will scour over decades of each other's public life in the hopes of finding one off-colour joke they told when normal people have heard, can cope with, and may have told off-colour jokes themselves.

Doing this with Absalom, Absalom! If I ever get the research out there. Would love to think of Tolstoy along these lines too.
@bernardtjoy I love to read Absalom Absalom and War And Peace side by side to see how these two great minds seems to understand the past as a part of a identity differently. I think Tolstoi thought that Past is never dead but it is indeed past.

It has long been a romantic idea of mine that our ancestors had as developed a sense of fun as we do.
@neolatyno The religious attire may have confused them contextually but otherwise I think they would have danced.

I think one thing much phenomenological research shows us is that we are sustained and made happy by the pursuit of our projects and not by the attainment of an illusory goal. And so if you give up because you are not enjoying enough success, it is the source of contentment that

Characters in 19th-century Russian literature be like: "I am an old man, with thinning hair and a body rife with pain, awaiting only the near release of my coffin!" And then you do the maths and the dude is 42.
