Still there is much work to be done about this stuff. If you are at MIT, please look out for Taosif. He is working on nuclear fusion as well as other problems in fluids and condensed matter.

He used a unique modified nonlinear flux function approach to solve MHD equations to prove the stability (to first order) of a class of toroidal topology under odd-parity perturbations. This resolves a decades-long gap between experiment and theory about FRCs.

My good friend Taosif Ahsan made an amazing discovery about the stability of the field-reversed configuration (FRC) magnetic field line structure under odd-parity perturbations.

Instabilities in flow structures are challenging to deal with mathematically, and can be catastrophic for applications such as magnetic confinement of fusion plasmas.
