In our case, classifying almost 10,000 trees took less than 1 hour of airborne LiDAR collection time, compared to 1,000 person-hours for a ground survey.

Insects are typically hard to detect directly using remote sensing methods like LiDAR, because they are small. But extended phenotypes, such as subtle differences in the trees they occupy, are more easily detected.

The LiDAR data capture subtle differences in tree shape associated with different ant species, so we developed a protocol to segment trees (esp where they contact) and classify them according to the occupying ants.

Whistling Thorn acacias (Vachellia drepanolobium) are a keystone tree species in tropical east African savannas. Almost all trees are occupied by mutualistic ant colonies that protect their host plants from large herbivores.

In this study, led by postdoc Dr Zhengyang (Yang) Wang, we show that we can identify the ant species occupying individual trees over large spatial scales from LiDAR point cloud data.
