Hi, I'm Brooke. If you're curious about product management, growth, or startups, join me and follow along. TL;DR I'm a Product Lead at Grammarly. I have my MBA and studied CS and Astrophysics. I took a non-traditional path to PM. I love startups, solving problems, and building.

The Growth PM role has been a great fit for me. It requires me to be data-driven and metrics focused, understanding the business impact of my work.

After Belle, I joined Grammarly as the first Growth PM. It's been a crazy ride. The team was 250 when I joined, and we've quadrupled. I've worked across the entire growth funnel - acquisition to churn. I've transitioned to a lead role for user retention and monetization.

Ultimately, we shut it down. 529 plans are state-sponsored college savings plans. Our biggest roadblock was bank integration. Since 529s are state-sponsored, we needed to link with thousands of small state banks. Many of these didn't have APIs and still relied on checks.

Fast-forward, I got my MBA from Harvard Business School and started a consumer FinTech startup, Belle, with one of my classmates. We wanted to help parents find new ways to save for their kids' college education. Think Rakuten, but your big fat check goes into a 529 plan.

After consulting, I transitioned into tech, starting my PM journey at an early-stage digital healthcare, Medable. It was a small team (~15 people), and we were still figuring many things out. I wore a lot of hats - product, marketing, sales, strategy, and others.

Consulting gave me a crash course in business and the wide range of problems companies and people are trying to solve. And it was eye-opening! This has served me well as a PM.

So how did I get here... I'm from San Francisco and grew up hearing all the buzz about Silicon Valley. I studied Computer Science and Astrophysics at Harvard before starting my career in consulting. I knew consulting would only be a stop along the way and not the end destination.

At my core, I am a problem solver and a builder. Some of my first memories involved building blanket forts and playing with legos. Product management was a natural fit for me. I love creating delightful products to solve people's problems - both big and small.

Consistency is the secret sauce to success. Don't be a perfectionist. Get out there and create. Your talent will naturally grow the longer you can be consistent. β€”@PipDecks

Great article from @HarvardBiz about the transition to being a manager. The biggest problem for managers, and especially new managers, is time. Networking may feel like a dreaded task. Effective leaders employ networks for strategic purposes.

3. Critical thinking. A great product manager is a critical thinker. Demonstrate and explain how you think. Make sure to mention any assumptions to show you were thorough and comprehensive.

2.Prioritization. It’s ok if you’re not familiar with different PM prioritization frameworks. However, you need to be able to communicate the factors you considered to decide what to work on. What were your priorities? What did you have to pause or delay?

1. Result and impact-oriented. Demonstrate that you think you think like a PM. Don’t talk about when you submitted a Jira ticket or worked with engineers. What problem were you trying to solve? Show the you took initiative to solve a user problem, even if it was a small one

I often get asked how to break into product management without previous experience. One of the biggest mistakes people make is talking about tasks instead of results and impact when interviewing. Here are three changes to improve how you talk about your experience & land a PM job
