Dāl Bhāt दाल भात eating people give weird looks when they hear Dāl Chāwal दाल-चावल. Hey we don't eat the rice uncooked! Now did you know that word भक्त bhakta (devotee) and bhāt भात (cooked rice) 🍚are connected etymologically?

@rheajgurung #Bengali #Hindi #Marathi #Nepali word bhāt भात (cooked rice) has come from Sanskrit bhakta (भक्त) = devotee (& also food or a meal). bhakta (भक्त) comes from #Sanskrit root bhaj भज् (to share, divide, distribute, cook).

@avtansa There is a Bangladeshi commentator Shamim Chowdhury who, whenever Mushfiqur Rahim hits a sweep shot, says - that's दाल-भात for him (Mushfiq) 😀.

@avtansa I didn’t, but I’ve hypothesized that you can tell whether a people are traditionally rice eating or not, because if they are, their language has different words for cooked and uncooked rice.

@avtansa I always found it curious that bhāt is less common in wider Hindi-speaking areas - but seems to reappear in Bisibele Bath ಬಿಸಿ ಬೇಳೆ ಭಾತ್ much further south 😃

@avtansa could it be punjabi influence as we systematically say राजमाह-चावल, छोले-चावल? is the same distinction between चने and छोले? i have also heard that छोले is cooked but चना uncooked.
