In conclusion: After many years of good-natured Francis Zeldarity, the Catholic Church might opt for another Zoë. So, yeah, it doesn’t really look good for either Pizzaballa or Tagle. /END

… Francis. You know him, you love him (unless you’re a JD Vance kind of guy). He’s so Zelda that he named himself after uber Zelda Francis von Assisi. A bit over the top, if you ask me.

Fast forward to 2005 when Joseph Ratzinger became Pope Benedict XVI. His initial Zeldarity as a young mean was crushed by the upheavals of 1968 and he became a lifelong bookworm slash red tape Zoë. He unexpectedly resigned in 2013 leaving the helm to …

He kicked the bucket after a month and – in an early act of sustainability – his successor simply recycled the name: John Paul II. By all accounts, he was a Zelda at his election but developed signs of Zoëness later in life.

The first conclave of 1978 elected John Paul I (left), who tried to bridge the gap between Zelda (hence John) and Zoë (hence Paul). But that was a white lie (puns intended) – he was a certified 💯 % Zelda.

His successor was Paul VI: brainy, always wrestling with all sorts of dilemmas, trying to lift the Church, trying to walk the line like Johnny Cash. Unlike Johnny Cash, he was responsible for the infamous encyclical “Humanae Vitae”. It was clearly the work of a Zoë.

Let’s start with John XXIII. Look at that guy – total Zelda. On a hunch, he kick-started Vatican II, which did for the Catholic Church what Pete Seeger did for folk music. How cool is that?
