Today is the pub date of #ByTheFireWeCarry. I’m thinking a lot about the shoulders I stand on. My parents who have always had faith in me. The friend who celebrated milestones and coaxed me through the overwhelm. The incredible staff @HarperCollins who guided this book into being

Earlier this week, I assigned my undergraduate students’ an interesting task: to take a nap. In a world (and in academia) that is so bent on grind culture and constantly being busy, I wanted to remind them that rest is a requirement, not a privilege, to be their best selves

The ideal sleep time of 7-8 hours was based on studies conducted on men. It wasn’t discovered until recently that women produce almost all of their hormones while sleeping, unlike men who also produce hormones while awake. For women that process takes 9-10 hours.

I want to take a moment to manifest softness, ease, peace, and opulence into the lives of all my Indigenous queens out there. We’ve been resilient and tough long enough and our era of rest and luxury is upon us.

The Taylor swift drama just shows me that men (and even some women) are committed to dismissing and even downright hating the things that women enjoy. Other examples are Stanley cups, makeup, Snapchat filters, and sooooo much more

if you think Jason Kelce going bonkers at a football game is cool, but are annoyed by Taylor Swift cheering, you might just hate women

It makes me sick to think that Indigenous trauma could be repurposed into a feel-good fantasy novel, AND that the novel takes an apologist’s stance towards the abductors in the story.

Joined a book club & was excited to read this month’s book, The House in the Cerulean Sea…until I wasn’t. It was written by a white man & listed as 1 of 2020’s best “feel good reads” but it was inspired by the forced separation of 20,000 Native kids from their families in Canada

Imagine being this damn ignorant
Ute Chairman gets all Suge Knight at the Source Awards, shouting at state recognized Tribes in attendance at NCAI: “Get some federal recognition!” There are reports of physical altercations in the hallways. @NCAI1944 has completely lost its way.

So if your granny’s grandma was enslaved, the egg (that would become your granny) in utero was in your enslaved great great grandma’s body. Thus your body is made of cells that were literally in an enslaved person’s body WHILE they were enslaved.
The trauma of slavery & genocide (& all other oppression & trauma) being “in your DNA” is not some woowoo abstract concept. It is materially tangible. Biologically tangible. Your body is made of cells that were in the body of a person surviving terrorism.

I’m a Chickasaw romance writer with my MBA from USC. My debut is coming out with Berkley Pub and it’s the first Native American romcom to be published by a major publisher: starring Natives, written by a Native, set in OKC!
