Great to see our paper out in @NatureComms 🎉 We observed high #isoprene concentrations in the @_SouthernOcean 🌊 linked to air masses from the marginal ice zone. Comparing with models, we found current emission estimates needed at least a 20x increase to account for obs... 🧵1/4

Atmospheric modellers - has anyone looked at the impact of emissions from seaweed farms under different growth scenarios? Wondering if enough #DMS or #BVOCs can be emitted to impact #Climate? 🤔
Seaweed is the ideal crop because it grows fast and doesn’t require fertilisers, pesticides, freshwater or land. But that doesn’t mean it’s risk free. Cultivating seaweed on a larger scale could disrupt the oceans’ ecosystems. https://t.co/FC6GQJG5Ar

We also found we needed a daytime isoprene source to account for the observed diel cycle ☀ Higher emissions affect the OH radical budget and how we model oxidation processes in the @_SouthernOcean, used as a proxy for the pre-industrial atmosphere 2/4 👇
Marine isoprene emissions have implications for atmospheric oxidising capacity and aerosol loading and so knock on implications for climate. Including them in climate models as standard may also change our understanding of the pre-industrial atmosphere and so...

Our paper on combining observations of marine isoprene with modelling in @UkesmProject has been published in @NatureComms. Our study suggests that prior emission estimates of marine isoprene need to be scaled by at least 20x so that models can match observed concentrations. 1/n
