Electricity used to be a monthly subscription on a standard rate when Edison started. They hadn’t invented the concept of an electricity meters or a “Watt”. So you had to “pay-per-lamp”. Then the electricity meter got invented and usage-based pricing got invented.
“Hourly wage” didn’t exist before the 1800s, because most people didn’t have a clock to measure it. Railroads created the pressure to standardize time (to avoid crashes.) That brought us clocks. Then we had hourly wages.
