Since this struck a nerve, I’m starting 5-12th grade schools that don’t churn out sheep First one opens in Short Hills, NJ next year https://t.co/J55IXiprQF

Our convo reminded me of many lines from Excellent Sheep https://t.co/QHfakYzpBy
My 10 favorite quotes from "Excellent Sheep" by William Deresiewicz This is 1 of 3 books that has red-pilled me on how broken our education system is -------- “Kid getting into elite school is parents getting an A for parenting… Child is extension of the self. It is parental

Talked to elite school admissions officer Said every boy from east coast: 1. Does robotics 2. Has some NGO (in Asia typically) they did work with 3. Built a startup Said they're all indistinguishable from each other

Very smart guy, but bad ideas abt AI in education Instead of turning teachers into AI cops, make student learning more meaningful - PBL - abolish subjects - mastery over marks - work that offers relevance, impact & autonomy Particularly critical for 12-18 yo
A number of people are talking about implications of AI to schools. I spoke about some of my thoughts to a school board earlier, some highlights: 1. You will never be able to detect the use of AI in homework. Full stop. All "detectors" of AI imo don't really work, can be

For those hiring A way I've found to reduce the # of AI automated & spray-and-pray applicants is to put a Google form link in w/ a simple question in the req In our case, "what about our school model interests you?" Gets me to the 1% of applicants who have done some homework

I made up a word ~17 months ago That word is "entrepreneuring" When I describe our school as one focused on entrepreneuring, parents will sometimes say "my daughter/son is not a founder". And I have to tell them that becoming a founder is not the point Instead, I describe it

School is a drug we force kids to take 180 days a year for 13 years. It is malpractice. What if we tried something that actually works?

I understand ppl in different tribes want to make this a culture war thing But this is just administration at schools responding rationally to incentives Sadly, they’re very bad incentives

Grade inflation is not woke. It is predictable behavior from a school and university system paid on enrollment and completion.

▪️ The fix is not turning school into job training ▪️ They shouldn't chase whatever skills employers want this qtr ▪️ Deep thinking should not be replaced by prompt engineering That's the wrong strategy Education should widen the path. Not narrow it. https://t.co/Ri6HTulBWM

Harvard’s student paper just said the quiet part out loud Their own students now argue that Harvard is training people for a world that no longer exists IMO, the article diagnoses the right symptoms But the prescription to fix it is wrong

😂The hydration-industrial-complex is not to be F'd with
My parenting hot take is your kid doesn’t need an emotional support water bottle orbiting within 10 ft of them at all times. Preschools and schools are absolutely rabidly obsessed with making sure your kid is never more than 5 seconds away from a sip of drink. Sorry, your kid

TikTok is frying our kids' brains (not surprising) New research analyzing 98,299 people found that TikTok style short-form videos (SFVs) have a moderate negative impact on cognition and the biggest hits are to: ** attention ** inhibitory control Stress and anxiety also climb

@chamath @BillAckman This measure would wipe out most of these majors OR force colleges to reprice them dramatically lower Right now, these majors lead to overindebted, undereducated students who have sh1t job prospects That frustration leads to lots of nonsense we see now https://t.co/WKnxTvAkJ2

This is a very logical and intuitive reform I advocated for universities owning 80% of the loan, smaller amounts could work as well to create market discipline Here @chamath discusses @BillAckman's proposal to make universities own the first $20k

1 year ago, I wrote my proposal on how to solve a $1.73 trillion problem aka the world's most inefficient government-backed market. I'm talking about college student debt. How it works today: * Sellers (colleges) face zero consequences for failure * Buyers (students) can't

Talk to students and they’ll tell you accommodations are gamed Kids with families at top & bottom of income range get them cuz miraculously they all have ADHD or some other issue Another bad incentive in education making grades an increasingly low value signal
Event study of how accommodations affect your GPA: they help A LOT. Students with accommodations can get extra time on tests, and sometimes use computers when other students can't. 7/
