10/ We urge fisheries managers and policy/decision makers to systematically collect detailed ownership information (including beneficial ownership), and to make this information publicly available. Full paper here:

9/ Our results indicate that ownership analysis of productive fishing capital is an essential element of responsible fisheries governance and management, especially for ensuring transparency, equitability and accountability in a North-South context.

8/ Overall, within-EEZ fishing activity was low for the tuna vessels studied. However, we identified the Galapagos Islands EEZ (Ecuador) as an important fishing area, both for Ecuadorian companies and for foreign companies operating through Ecuadorian intermediaries.

7/ Fishing activity hotspots are found at the intersection of FAO 77 and FAO 87 (North) – notably the area east of French Polynesia’s EEZ and north of Pitcairn Islands EEZ, and from there east into FAO 87 (North).

6/ For some countries, shifts are significant. For key flag countries Vanuatu, Panama, and Ecuador, respectively 36%, 21%, and 13% of vessels are ultimately owned by foreign companies.

5/ Ownership shifts impact about 6% of studied vessels, corresponding to 14% of gross tonnage. These shifts mean that many vessels that would be considered ‘local’ based on their flags, are actually controlled by foreign companies, mainly headquartered in the Global North.

4/ Our findings reveal that analysis at the flag state level underestimates the true fishing capacity of major DWF nations in EPO. This is due to flags of convenience, often paired w/ ultimate ownership of subsidiaries in tax havens or jurisdictions with low regulatory oversight.

3/ First, we identify the corporate owners of registered EPO tuna vessels, and their countries of registration, using Orbis data. Second, we analyze country shifts between these levels. Third, we spatially examine fishing effort for a subset of tuna vessels using @GlobalFishWatch

2/ Research on DWF typically emphasizes the flag states of vessels, rather than the nationalities of the corporations that own them, despite evidence of their efforts to obscure ownership. We dive deeper, examining ownership at multiple levels: flag, direct & ultimate owners.

1/ Distant-water fishing (DWF) is a global business with major players operating far beyond their own waters. Our new study uncovers the corporate ownership behind 1,648 IATTC registered tuna fishing vessels in the Eastern Pacific Ocean (EPO).

If the iPhone were made from start to finish in the United States, it would cost at least $30,000 per phone. Imperialism transfers the costs onto the world's most marginalized people. @tri_continental has a great study on how this works:

This is what genocide looks like. These are the 2913 Palestinian children killed by the Israeli military this month, as of Thursday, October 26. As the Israeli airstrikes on Gaza intensify, we recognize with horror and grief that this death toll is already inaccurate. 1/5

Great piece by @DiplomaticIfe - "If harmful subsidies aren’t effectively addressed, a ban on fishing on the high seas could end up contributing to increased fishing activities within the jurisdictions of coastal countries.'
In light of the discussions about the much-celebrated BBNJ, I reflect on how the new treaty to protect the world's oceans may hurt vulnerable #African fisheries. Thanks @Samooner and Charl for the editorial support. https://t.co/6RrpSgBY2S via @TC_Africa

Outrageous display of solidarity with a genocidal apartheid regime. Go shame yourselves deeply @EU_Commission, the Palestinian people were massacred and chased from their homes in 1948 and have been oppressed ever since #FreePalestine #EndApartheid

Great piece. "A paper in..."Nature Food" found that only 1/4 of the world’s people could be fed with staple grain crops grown within 100 km of where they live. The average minimum distance at which the world’s people can be supplied with staple foods, it found, is 2,200 km."
I would love everyone in environmental movements to read this essay. It’s a painful, difficult but really important subject. By avoiding it we give a clear run to those whose proposals would lead, literally, to the deaths of billions. Please RT. Thank you.
