The next TTL podcast episode coming out tomorrow has a fun behind the scenes segment, which perfectly sums up many video calls. Decided it would be appropriate leaving it in as we were talking about remote work.

"We've got to get the coffee shops, the barber shops, the law firms back into residential neighborhoods" At the risk of liking a politician, watch this.

I GOT IN!!!! I went around in a redirect loop for a while in the browser, cleared cookies twice, got a working cookie consent form, logged in again, got a notification on my phone about the login, opened the notification on my phone, got a CONSET FORM THERE!

I suspect that there is a clue about what might be wrong in the one error message that pops up sometimes that says "consent_required". Not sure what consent or where I should give it.

So now in the app, it knows my handle and lets me log in. 🥳 But all I get is "Something went wrong. Please try again later." Or, even more hilariously, when I try to access help, "An unexpected error occurred." So much for getting help.

Next thing I know I'm in an endless loop of error messages. This was all in a browser, so my wife suggests that I should get the app and use that. Fair enough, she says the web site is terrible.

Thought I'd keep it simple by using my existing Facebook login. So far so good. Had to select a handle. This one was already used (😞) so I selected a new one.

So, thinking that I should branch out, I decided to start an Instagram account. Somehow I've completely broken it by just logging in.

Here is an interesting impact that I've seen from teams using gitflow. They release software that hasn't actually been tested, even though they think they've tested it all.

While “tell, don’t ask” is a good principle in software design, “ask, don’t tell” is better in organisation design.

I enjoyed the succinct description of the impact of a group's way of thinking on the org. And the openness to including the very same people propagating that thinking in taking part in the solution and yet being courageous enough to admit that they might not all make the cut.

The result is meetings that are comfortable for the organiser (and maybe other attendees) and ineffective for understanding the situation and making informed decisions.

One of the most impactful ideas I got from Productive Workplaces Revisited is "Get the whole system in the room." I often see this idea missed when setting up meetings. The desire to keeping the attendee list short ends up trumping the need to get the whole system.

I find it really hard most of the time to see the impact that I want to have is actually happening. In this case I wanted people to think that they can behave differently and have a nicer place to work. In some small way, I think it worked.

I had the greatest feeling from feedback ever today. “You were the first person who I heard speak up that it didn’t have to be this way,” referencing when I raised the topic of psychological safety on a team.
