From @_VictoriaGibson + @bcohenn: A push to legalize cafes, corner stores and home businesses in Toronto’s residential neighbourhoods — which was unsuccessful last year amid outcry from residents’ associations — is back at city hall. https://t.co/n7JFeh4Duo via @TorontoStar

City staff are back with a modified plan to allow corner stores and cafes in residential neighbourhoods. The residents’ association that opposed the plan says it’s still not happy.

THIS is the point of neighbourhood retail btw. Intersections that become loci for interactions, serendipitous encounters, and neighbourly expressions of support for the local community. Pushing this stuff to only the busiest arterials misses the point.

Councillor Matlow, respectfully, you failed to mention that Frank and some members of his community actually decorated his entire intersection in celebration of the Jays. And look at that charming neighbourhood patio right on the corner 😗👌
Some heroes don’t wear capes- but they do carry @BlueJays flags. Meet Frank the crossing guard, who protects local kids crossing at Logan and Withrow in the heart of Riverdale. People like Frank help create safe, fun and vibrant communities. #GoJaysGo

Latest NIMBY letter had 209 signatures. The petition I’ll be contributing and speaking to in my deputation has over 2600 with about a hundred added today alone.

Imagine my terrifying robot son giving a passionate defense of neighbourhood retail before getting stuck in a loop of goading Matlow and Bradford in to marshmallow and patty eating contests.

I’m buying one of these creepy little guys, training it on my tweets, and sending then sending him to do deputations on my behalf at council.

Anyhow this is stupid and political parties of on all sides capitalize on this sort of thing…but if I ever talk to you about an uncle who was/is my grandfather’s age…by strict definitions that is not my uncle.

In other words, *not* referring to folks in that generation with some sort of honourific was considered disrespectful. The strict hierarchy of the nuclear family is a relatively recent and culturally isolated trend—I know from friends my exp is pretty global.

Not to “not all white people” this asinine conversation but in my Yugo fam, virtually any older woman or man who came over on the boat with my grandparents was referred to as “stric” or “teta”. It was a term of affection, respect, and (notably 😅) deference.
The “aunt” who Zohran Mamdani said was too afraid to wear her hijab on the subways after 9/11 is actually a deceased distant cousin, he clarified Monday. Via @HannahFNYP and @Matt_Fischetti

Save Finch Store/Martin Cafe and Protect TO Neighbourhood Retail
Stumbled across this cute corner store/cafe at 42 Dewson St. There is a sign in the window for a petition because complaints from a neighbour have put the store at risk. If you are walking south to Do West Fest, consider popping in an signing it.

Email your councillors. Submit comments. Request to speak. The NIMBYs have been coordinating, and the results are starting to show. They honestly aren't that numerous; we can take 'em. Time for us to show up too.

Last year, this topic was deferred. The folks running Finch Store have been granted a stay of execution, but now they just have to hang out while council kicks this thing around again. It's time to get this done:
torontotoday.ca
After public outcry, the city postponed enforcement of its own bylaw, allowing the Finch Store to stay open. But the business’ fate now hangs on a city council decision

The fight to save Finch Store and expand where one can run a small business is not over. Just took a look at the Neighbourhood Retail agenda item...someone has submitted a petition against with 209 signatures. Ours has over 2,500, let's do even better:

If I go to one more of my regular karaoke nights and hear, “oh don’t worry, we’ll start when the game ends”, I’m going to lose my mind. When did the game end yesterday? I’m convinced you’re all collectively doing this to punish me and I don’t know why.

I don’t know how to say this without getting yelled at but as a bar karaoke enthusiast who keeps having their life-giving and fulfilling performance opportunities delayed by the far more profitable sports crowd: Toronto Blue Jays how dare you?

I hate to insist but the term is “another glass box”—if we lose the ancient texts and traditions my entire brand falls apart.
