I'm doing a few talks this week about the art of interviewing, and I dug up this piece about what I think is most fundamental: treat an interview like a relationship--before, during, and after a conversation. It's ethical *and* leads to more nuanced tape.

NYC based podcast companies: I beg of you, if you're going to descend on a small town in search of your next hit podcast, please don't spend the first several minutes explaining the place to us (ie trashing it) in a way that presumes none of us have a sense of it or care about it
you don't have to only say nice things to describe a place! but it's much more interesting to hear tape from someone who lives there about a place's cruelties and the tradeoffs of living there than from someone who just got off a plane.
Jad invented something totally new, and grew it into a juggernaut collective of storytellers who found opportunities and space that never would've existed without him. The best way to be an artist. Thank you.
Hey everybody. I have some big personal news. I am stepping aside as host of Radiolab. This show that I started in 2002 - in my basement - is about to celebrate its 20th anniversary, and this feels like the right time.

i was reminded again that the
@KindaFunnyVids
corner of the internet is the kindest, warmest, most gleefully obsessive neighborhood on the internet. Thanks so much for having me back, friends!
My favorite podcaster
@annasale
stops by the Kinda Funny Podcast to talk about hard things like death, sex, and money as well as trying to convince me to not open that second bottle of wine. (She fails.)

I just learned that Taylor Books, my hometown bookstore in WV, has just been taken over by a long-time employee. I love the place so much! If you're considering preordering my book, please do it at this link to support this essential community space.
in my house, there is a new puppy and a toddler who's discovered the icemaker. this means 85% of my decision-making power each day is dedicated to what I should do after I notice a puddle on the floor.
today's
@deathsexmoney

@j_smithcameron
(GERRI!!!), where we talked about family, change,
@succession
, egg creams and what acting has taught her about living through uncertainty.

we talk about high school, internet romance, asking for help in a mental health crisis, and a major perk of adulthood: never growing out of your comfortable shoes.
After the guy tried to get my daughter to wave while we were on a neighborhood walk, she says: “We’re looking for sour grass, we’re not looking for men.”
26 years after teen Anna got her first job at
@TaylorBooksWV

Hey! I'm 40 today! And I can't have a party! But I can invite you all to donate to an incredible organization in my hometown that works on homelessness prevention and food insecurity that really needs extra help right now. PARTY! LET'S DO THIS!
Michelle Alexander chose to tell her daughter, and then all of us, about her most private pain so that we could all better understand how the rules we're making impact lives.
i wonder what kinds of conversations her rapist is having about these laws?
i've been writing a book for a long, long time and i'm sharing a rough version with some readers. One told me the pacing of the not-too-often-but-enough jokes reminded him why we're friends and, you all, I may be finally turning the corner from dread to pride w this thing.
i love LOVE my
@wnyc
coworkers. it has been a very hard, sad day -- and a day when I feel so grateful for my team, our newsroom and its reporting, and our commitment to our mission.
My isolation breaking point might just be tonight, when I made up a song about the missing remote control to the tune of “Control” by Janet Jackson, and not a single person in my family recognized how clever it was.
I worked on
@TheTakeaway
2009-2010. We all knew bullying was part of the show culture. I applaud
@celesteheadlee
@farai
and
@kristenmeinzer
for telling their stories about the abusive, undermining behavior of John Hockenberry. I am deeply sorry more of us didn't stand with you.
most days i worry about big tech and all the ways it's making us worse, but i just dug way back into gmail to read the first emails sent back and forth after I met my husband, and momentarily, i feel very grateful for their massive cloud.
I am thrilled to share with you that…I HAVE WRITTEN A BOOK! And it has a beautiful cover by
@kglyder
. As you make it through this season of talking about hard things, go ahead and preorder this as a gift for yourself for May, 4, 2021.
made me remember
@thedanieb
talking about coming to NYC at 15 as part of a Bravo program for kids of color to learn to make videos. It's when she saw The Color Purple on Broadway for the first time, before she was Tony-nominated in its revival.
everything is terrible, but my 1 year-old now says "Bye, Aligator!" when I head back into the bedroom to work (she hasn't quite grasped the 'see you later' part)
just got an email from a guy who was a listener when I was just starting out, who is about my dad's age. he was writing to apologize that years ago, he'd complimented my delivery by calling it "sultry." he wanted to say that was sexist and he wishes he'd chosen a different word.
Loved the interview with Sarah Jessica Parker on
@nprfreshair
. Lots of wonderful moments, and esp appreciated her admitting that as mom of 3 kids, she's missed a lot of prestige television, inc the finale to The Sopranos, which led to this delightful exchange with Terry:
"The announcement that the White House will revoke one of California’s signature environmental policies will come while Mr. Trump is traveling in the state, where he is scheduled to attend fund-raisers in Los Angeles and Silicon Valley."

@josephlongo_
i could use a zillion think pieces responding to Connie Britton's zinger last ep: "Your generation's only sacred value. Biting the hand that feeds you."
Hot tip from my therapist Laurie: to get out of an anxious mindset, instead of making a gratitude list, try listing moments and relationships to *savor.* My internal monologue is already so much sexier and less cloying!
listening intently to latest political news on NPR with my 3 year old on the way home from preschool.
her burning question: "Hey!..........do WE have any peaches?"
Bill Withers was the very first guest on

@wvpublic

just talked to sociology prof at Grinnell who's developing a first-year course built totally around
@deathsexmoney

Feeling angry about things that have happened at your workplace? Me too. I talk with
@noeleking
about sexual harassment and bullying by former host John Hockenberry at
@thetakeaway
, a show where we worked together.
I interviewed more than 30 people for my book, Let's Talk About Hard Things, about some of the most tender, tough moments in their lives.
Today, I'm getting messages as they receive their finished hardcovers in the mail, and let me tell you, I want to hold it all *so close*
it is the end of a long work week and the children are in the other room quietly amusing themselves by eating water out of small glasses with spoons. thank you, dear spoons.
it was really fun to talk about my book and interviewing with
@samsanders
, someone who is -- without a doubt -- one of the greatest professional listeners and hard thing bringer-uppers working today.

How do you navigate life's toughest topics?
@annasale

I spent 20 minutes talking with a Lyft driver today about our favorite ice cream treats — “first of all, I’m all about sherbet,” he said — and it made me feel the best I’ve felt about America in months.
My book comes out in May 2021! It's about talking about hard things -- how to do it and how these conversations change us -- and she has a beautiful cover. more here, including where to preorder:
in the space of 12 hours, i have gone from not caring a whit about Love is Blind to wanting to give the whole cast Presidential Medal of Freedom medals for being there to distract us all during these trying times.
My hometown paper, a Pulitzer winner this year, declaring bankruptcy. A local family has owned it for more than 100 years. If you have $$$ and care about investigative reporting in Appalachia, wanna buy a paper?
now, i don't know that I'm the first author to get to launch a book with conversations with both
@ezraklein
and
@fakedansavage
, but if someone else has, TELL ME, because I'm 100% sure we would be friends.
my great idea for the day: before patients are discharged from the hospital, a case worker should stop by to make sure they have the right forms and medical authorizations for any federal Family Leave + any state disability/paid leave they're eligible for.
Netflix says it will produce an eight-episode, final season of House of Cards, resuming production in early 2018 without star Kevin Spacey, who faces numerous allegations of sexual harassment.
Voice from behind me in the carseat: can we listen to the song that’s like ‘If I Needed You,’ but not? But close to it?
....Huh. Not sure what you mean?
Carseat: Uhhhh....the one with brother?
Oh! Lean on Me?
Car seat: YES!!!
PROUD PARENT MOMENT
WHOA. after 3 and a half years, i just exported all my book interview transcripts and revision drafts to an external hard drive and PEOPLE IT FEELS AMAZING!!!
what a special time this was together with the
@deathsexmoney
team, guests we've gotten to know well, and so many listeners. And thank you for capturing it so beautifully, Sarah!
I wrote about "Four Interviews and a Funeral," in which
@annasale
and friends of her great, possibly late podcast "Death, Sex & Money" made the most of an uncertain moment.
i loved watching them take it all in last night at the
#GoldenGlobes
and am so excited to share this sweet, honest, funny conversation about their collaborative relationship.
When
@Daniels
first met, they didn’t get along. Eventually, they began a creative partnership that’s lasted over 10 years, including
@allatoncemovie
. Today, they talk with
@annasale
about ADHD, masculinity, and approaching work like summer camp. 🎧:
