I'm on the job market! My #EconJMP examines climate adaptation inequality in labor markets (see ⬇️). This is part of my work on the effects of climate change/plastic pollution on workers & society - often with unique data & an interdisciplinary lens. https://t.co/EIkmUVMtv5

I’m on the #EconJobMarket! I study labor, climate, entrepreneurship & innovation My JMP addresses a long-standing question in climate economics about the impact of climate change on physical capital (e.g., machinery, buildings). I examine the impact of flooding on manufacturing

I then run a survey to explore mechanisms. Platform workers believe that declining tasks/working less, esp. during peak times like hot days, deprioritizes them for future work. This constrains the flexibility of gig work, particularly when environmental risk are high.

On these hot days, food delivery gig workers work ~2 hrs more! This is in contrast to existing literature showing ⬇️ in labor supply in response to heat for climate-exposed workers in traditional industries (e.g., ag/construction). However, workers' hourly wages do NOT go up.

My JMP shows that gig platforms help consumers adapt to extreme temps, but shift climate-related burdens onto workers. 1) I show using millions of transactions in 4 countries that food delivery demand ⬆️ on hot days rel. to moderate days. (Order size, tips, & times don't change.)

Day 2 #NEUDC2024 started with Anna Papp @annapappp examining how extreme temperatures impact demand and supply of gig work platform services. She finds that high temperatures increase demand and also increase hours worked but have no impact on wages.

Check out @florian_grosset's amazing JMP on complementarities in labor supply, with results from not one but *two* field experiments! I've learned so much from Florian. Lucky to have him as a friend and as a coauthor.

And finally, a fun fact: the title of the paper is a nod to the “rain follows the plow” myth and the Hawaiian proverb “rain follows the forest” that recognizes the important relationship between the islands’ forests and freshwater. 8/8

Our main takeaways for the climate lit: 1) Local climate change can be endogenous – use caution when using historical climate trends for identifying variation. 2) BUT similar policy-induced changes can also be exploited to causally identify the effects of climate change. 7/8

But not all tree-planting initiatives are equal. Over 30 species were planted in the Shelterbelt project, most of which were native + locally adapted to ensure ecological resilience. The same may not be true for some of today’s monoculture programs. 6/8
