Let me GUESS next step:. Removal of H1B 60 day grace period. They are already testing the water by sending deportation notices to H1B and H4 after their lay off. So, expect it to be formalized pretty soon.

Yes, it will increase the wait times for interview exponentially. There is already a crunch for slots and this will make it even tougher. Its a problem that they can solve but it seems nobody wants to solve it.
@anil_am22 The new rule mandating in-person interviews for H-1B visa renewals appears designed to restrict. Unfortunately, this will likely lead to a significant rise in consulate appointment wait times. Would love to see ur thoughts ?.
