The worst form - acute necrotizing encephalopathy (ANE) - inflammatory and hemorrhagic destruction of deep brain structures. Children with ANE had 44× higher odds of death or severe disability. ANE isn’t a mild complication - it’s a neuroinflammatory catastrophe.
