In this paper we highlight that the 13 years since the Arab Spring have seen worrying backsliding not only in terms of democracy, but also in terms of minorities' political representation, which caused a surge in civil war around the world. 12-1.30pm, PCC 110A.

3. Third, Luc Girardin is presenting a paper co-authored with Lars-Erik Cederman, Paola Galano Toro, Julian Wucherpfennig, and me, entitled "The Return of Geopolitics".

In this paper, we provide new cross-national evidence (91 countries, 1946-2023) that majority nationalist movements (MNMs) are clear predictors of civil war, the exclusion of ethnic minorities, genocide, and ethnic cleansing. 12-1.30pm, PCC 110A (Ethnic Inequality and Exclusion).

2. Second, Lars-Erik Cederman is presenting a paper co-authored with me entitled "Majority nationalism and civil war".

I also provide new quantitative evidence on this question, using new data on nationalist movements' identity basis for 91 countries since WW2. 10-11.30 am, Marriott Philadelphia Downtown, Salon J (Minority Politics in the Comparative Context).

1. First, I am presenting my paper "Constructing the nation". In this paper, I discuss the degree to which individual elites are free to "invent" the nation versus the degree to which they are constrained by structural factors, including ethnic demography and historical legacies.

@snsf_ch @unifr @InstituteOfFed Throughout the project, I will also examine possibilities to institutionally mitigate subnational majoritarianism - and avoid its potentially destabilizing consequences in the first place.

@snsf_ch @unifr @InstituteOfFed Relying on a new global database and employing a combination of statistical methods, geographic information systems, and qualitative case studies, I will study the drivers of subnational majoritarianism along with its consequences for subnational conflict and democracy.

@snsf_ch @unifr @InstituteOfFed Prominent examples from Indonesia (Aceh), Nigeria (Plateau state), Bosnia (Republika Srpska), and even Canada (Québec) testify to the importance of subnational majoritarianism.

@snsf_ch @unifr @InstituteOfFed In turn, they may abuse autonomy to discriminate against outgroups, generating new conflict and democratic deficits.

@snsf_ch @unifr @InstituteOfFed I will be examining the causes and consequences of subnational majoritarianism. Thereby, some self-determination movements - which demand autonomy or independence for subnational regions - engage in exclusionary nation-building *within* these regions.
