"Sleep-wake related changes in intracellular chloride regulate plasticity at glutamatergic cortical synapses" is now out at @CurrentBiology (1/5 )

Alfonsa et al. show that sleep-wake history can account for variations in chloride-dependent EGABAA, which bidirectionally regulate glutamatergic LTP by modulating membrane potential dynamics....

We conclude that chloride dynamics provide a functional link between changes in a neuron’s physiology that are associated with sleep-wake history and the mechanisms responsible for the induction of glutamatergic synaptic plasticity. (5/5).

This increased depolarization results in increased LTP. Pharmacological manipulation associated with reduced chloride decreases membrane depolarization and LTP level. (4/5).

Wake and sleep affect brain's plasticity, but how neuronal changes associated with sleep/wake history affect plasticity mechanism is unclear. Here we show that sleep-wake history changes in neuronal chloride affect membrane potential dynamic and LTP. (2/5).

Gramicidin patch after months break is just like riding a bike except that during the break some random people come and mess with your bike in multiple different places, in multiple different ways.
