Following a recent consultation @DefraGovUK.has laid legislation to allow chickens/turkeys to be lifted by their legs whilst also making it clear that chickens/turkeys must not be caught by a single leg.

Transcript of a debate in Parliament on Monday on constraining farm animals in cages and crates following an e-petition on the topic:.

"The Commission plans to present its first proposal, to revise existing EU legislation for on-farm animal welfare, next year. It will also follow-up on its commitment to phase out cages for certain categories of animals, as called for in the Citizens’ Initiative End the Cage Age”.

The Commission is inviting citizens, businesses, NGOs and other interested parties to give their input on the revision of the EU’s animal welfare legislation, through a Call for Evidence published today. It will run for four weeks until 16 July 2025.

Research on consumer insights on animal welfare method of production food labelling has now been published. This was carried out for @DefraGovUK by Ipsos UK. Last week the response to the 2024 consultation on AW labelling was also published.

The findings and recommendations from the EU PigStun project were just released, this considers the pros and cons of alternatives to CO2 gas stunning of pigs.

"Recognising the strong support (. ) for clearer food information on welfare standards, we will consider the potential role of method of production labelling reform as part of the UK Govt’s development of an overarching approach to animal welfare and the wider food strategy.".

Headline stat: "There was strong support for mandatory method of production labelling reform, with over 99% of individuals and 69% of organisations who responded supporting mandatory labelling reform.".
