Joe Roth, Class of 1977, @Cal quarterback and top NFL prospect, died at his apartment in Berkeley on February 19, 1977, after a valiant struggle against melanoma. He had played much of his senior season knowing he was terminally ill. He was 21 years old.

No one knows the beating that our bodies take on turf more than us โ the players. The sport is violent enough. We shouldnโt be taking more damage from the field, too. #SaferFields

Ask any player and they will tell you they prefer to play on grass. Even coaches will tell you itโs easier to stand on sideline if itโs a grass field. We know the data, the bare minimum the NFL should do is remove slit film turf, the evidence is there. #saferfields
