: The Diep River Catchment
[Thread]
Today I visited the confluence of the Diep & Mosselbank Rivers just outside Philadelphia.
I’ve long been wanting to visit this point: where the two largest rivers to flow into & through Cape Town meet.
1. Good News in
@CapeTown
!
Earlier this week Louis Van Wyk, the
@CityofCT
Milnerton Lagoon manager, found this incredible Water Net Algae at the Milnerton Racecourse Conservation Area.
Here’s why this discovery is important:
Last night in Grassy Park a young male Hippo from Rondevlei Nature Reserve went for a walk about!
@CityofCT
nature reserve rangers quickly guided him back into the reserve.
This dispersing male will be relocated to another nature reserve. 🦛
Had a once in a lifetime night swim in the bioluminescent sea sparkle at Fish Hoek beach.
It was great to join so many Capetonians last night on this safe & clean beach, in awe of this natural wonder.
Another motivation to conserve our world class coastline in
@CapeTown
.
Agapanthus BLACKJACK has won plant of the year at the Chelsea Flower Show.
South Africa has many internationally competitive horticultural plant-product developers. This plant will cloned and soon sold all over the world.
Hey
@HermanMashaba
- you fell on your sword over relatively spurious reasons. Your position was not untenable. Now your story ends with the corrupt recapturing your city. Do you feel some responsibility for handing Johannesburg back to the ANC?
My first national election walking to the voting station without my grandparents. I honour them today & the sacrifice they made for me to choose who represents me.

Today there were X5 more flowers in my introduction plots than in the Obs remnant. 🙏🏽

I invite Councillor Madlala & the

to visit the Mother City and see how our teams start fixing over 90% or leaks within 2 hours of reporting.
Wishing our colleagues in Cape Town a speedy recovery as they battle sewer spillages in some beaches. Running a Metro is complex,with many challenges,even if you have been spared from the devastating floods last year.
Councillor Nkosenhle Madlala,
Chair: Governance&Human Capital
The DA, unfortunately, does not seem to accept blackness that isn’t on its terms.
As soon as black leaders push back or challenge party choices, they are seen as problems - not potential sources of introspection, understanding or growth - and pushed out.
It’s so short-sighted
Happy Birthday to the legendary

1/4 A history of Hippopotamus in Cape Town & why our pod is important today 🦛
Hippos were historically found in all big floodplains of Cape Town. They were one of the first animals Jan Van Riebeek encountered in

& were quickly shot to local extinction.

@CapeTown
is one of the most biodiverse cities in the world. It is exciting to know that we still have pristine wetlands that are well conserved; with much more to discover!
Great motivation for everyone who’s invested in cleaning up our waterways & wetlands.
I walked from St James tidal pool to Surfer’s Corner to check up on the state of our beaches.
It’s great to see how clean, safe & well-used our beaches are by many Capetonians & visitors.
Our rich natural heritage is what makes
@CapeTown
stand out from other tourist cities.
This morning I conducted an oversight visit to the Greenpoint marine outfall point 1,7km at sea.
Here are the facts:
-
@CityofCT
marine outfalls are legal, licensed, & compliant.
- Scientists at the CSIR have found “no ecological disaster or major risk to human health”.
Last week the
@CityofCT
administration turned 1 year old. A key pledge made by
@geordinhl
was to clean up our waterways.
Here are 30 achievements by Team Cape Town (there are many more!) to clean up our Wetlands & Waterways:
ZANDVLEI
Today I conducted an oversight visit to Zandvlei Estuary in Muizenberg. I spent the morning with the excellent reserve manager Kyran Wright.
I can report the water is clean, the ecosystem is thriving & the reserve is well run.
Here are 5 things I saw:

Hydnora africana is a holoparasitic plant (not fungus). It produces no chlorophyll & is entirely dependent on a host plant. In place of roots it feeds off of its host via a special structure called a haustorium. This species parasitises on Euphorbias.

It is now the patriotic duty of every freedom loving South African who wants to Rescue SA from an ANC-EFF Doomsday, to make sure they come out and vote for the DA on the 29th of May.
Because, in this election, the stakes are just too high to stay at home.
Rescue SA, Vote DA.
I can report that the sections of beaches that were closed the last few days in Blaauwberg, Strand and Fish Hoek are now all safe for recreational use and therefore open. 🏊♂️
Mark my words. Cape Town will fix its sewer and beach issues within reasonable time. By December 2023, Durban beaches will still be a mess and the excuse will still be April floods. Comrades will still be bleating slogans.
The National Assembly nominates Molapi Lekganyane ANC, Glynnis Breytenbach, Fasiha Hassan,Dr John Hlophe of MK, Julius Malema of EFF and Athol Trollip of ActionSA to serve on JSC. BN
Excellent speech by Mayor

- The cabinet does not appoint senior government officials, the ANC deployment committee does.
- The cadre deployment committee is used to hire comrades, not civil servants.

Don’t be confused my fake news.
The Multiparty Charter is the vehicle to remove the ANC and keep the EFF & MK out government.

🚨BREAKING |
Transport Minister, Sindisiwe Chikunga has ordered the “immediate release” of impounded minibus taxis by the City of Cape Town. She says the legislation used has been “executed and implemented wrongly”, concluding that “it doesn’t exist” under current laws.
Water & sanitation is the bedrock of living with dignity. That’s why
@Our_DA
councillors prioritise clean water where we govern and advocate for it where we are in opposition.
We are committed to clean water in our taps, rivers & beaches. 💧
A momentous day for clean water in Cape Town. Mayor
@geordinhl
led the sod-turning for the Potsdam wastewater treatment plant upgrade.
This R5.2 billion project will double the capacity of the plant. Making right on our pledge to clean up Cape Town’s waterways. 💧
The very same leadership which:
- Stepped in after Election 2019 when the DA was in political ICU.
- Arrested the decline in Election 2021 & brought in more DA governments in more places than ever before.
- Is so “out of touch” yet most polls have the DA tracking towards 30%.
Yesterday I visited the newly installed Milnerton Lagoon aeration trial.
The
@cityofct
Wetlands Committee has been tracking & advising on this measure to improve conditions at Milnerton Lagoon. We are excited to see this up & running.
Here’s how this technology works:
4. According to Prof. Jenny Day, who sits on our
@CityofCT
advisory committee, this Net Algae is an indicator species of an aquatic ecosystem that has not been disturbed or degraded.
Spent the day in my nursery. Two highlights:
1: The 1st new generation of Erica turgida in 60+ years bred by my team. It only occurred around Kenilworth & is now Extinct in the Wild. Two big introductions planned for this year.
Lots of niche species lessons learnt with this.
ZEEKOEVLEI!

1 in 3 South Africans think Cape Town is the best-governed city. Good news spreads. That’s the DA Difference.

& I helped open the weir at Rondevlei Nature Reserve for the first time since 1998! After a brief boat ride we joined conservation staff in the water to open the sluice gate.
Rondebosch Common has soaked up every drop of rain!
Left: post-fire Leucadendron salignum which we reintroduced 2 years ago.
Right: Erica subdivaricata seedlings which have recruited. Parent plants were reintroduced by my mentor when I was still training.
🚨 BREAKING: DA support surges by over 505% in Ward 33 Enoch Mgijima, in the rural Eastern Cape!
Voters from all communities, including townships and rural areas, are uniting behind the DA as we build towards a new government in 2024.

As Cape Town grapples with the impacts of inclement weather, City teams have been out and about, restoring electricity faults, clearing fallen trees, attending to flooded areas and working in informal settlements to assist.
Our teams continue to be on high alert.

There is no reason any local government in the country needs to procure alcohol to do its work.
The PA has no respect for South Africans who are suffering in the broken city they govern with the ANC.
When we were elected in 2021 Mayor
@Geordinhl
pledged to clean up our waterways & protect Cape Town from this state of decline.
Here are 10 ways the DA-led
@CityofCT
is building & maintaining infrastructure to protect our river & beaches for future generations of Capetonians.
Great vibes at the
@WesternCapeDA
provincial congress!
We are electing a new leadership today to keep the best run province blue & get the DA into the union building! ✊🏽💙
The DA has resolved to put forward its own mayoral candidate for Johannesburg, signalling that it will not support ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba for mayor.
The top floor was burnt but it did not get to the Herbarium. Don’t yet know about water and smoke damage.
There are invaluable specimens of botanical heritage, including specimens of many extinct plant species.
This blazing building is the University of Cape Town botany department. It housed the Bolus Herbarium, which was founded in 1826 and housed one of the most extensive collections of specimens and literature on S'African, and particularly, western cape, flora.
2. After uploading his observation on

it was identified by international experts as Hydrodictyon africanum:
There are no contemporary observations of this species in South Africa.

The
@our_DA
only grows because it adapts to new challenges. Utilising Clause 57 of the Constitution the moonshot pact marks the historic 3rd phase of the DA, that has to save South Africa from the doomsday ANC-EFF alliance.
Congratulations
@jsteenhuisen
!
#DAcongress2023
@nickhedley
Things are significantly better than when the former leadership ran away from the trouble & low morale that they created. All largely thanks to
@helenzille
who has overwhelming support to do more.
Thanks for actually asking someone from the DA.
The Cape Waterlily (Nymphaea nouchali var. caerulea) used to be so common in Cape Town that an entire suburb is named after it, Lotus River.
It became extinct on the Cape Flats in the early 1900s due to habitat loss.
Should we reintroduce it? 😏
#GenerationRestoration
I strongly condemn the politically motivated misinformation campaign about Cape Town’s environmental waters. It is irresponsible & has negative repercussions for ecotourism jobs.
-All beaches were open during the 23/24 festive season.
-All vleis were open for 365 days in 2023.
#CityofCT
: The City undertook a water quality sampling test at Camps Bay in the white discoloured area, and off Granger Bay where kelp mucus was seen. The samples were analysed by the independent SABS Laboratory and came back as excellent. The results refute misinformation.
LAST CALL!
If you’re in the voting queue by 21:00 you must be allowed to vote.
The queues are long, but they are moving.
Please get in the queue and stay there to cast your vote in the most important election since 1994.

#KnowYourRiver
: Lower Diep River
This morning I will be walking the length of the Lower Diep River to Milnerton Lagoon mouth.
I will see for myself the state of the river & meet community members & officials along the way.
Start: 8AM
[Follow this Tread]
1. Yesterday we signed the historic, first-ever partnership between the
@CityofCT
& a water stakeholder!
Here’s how this agreement with The Litterboom Project will clean up Cape Town’s rivers, beaches & create jobs:
It’s far more likely that the *real* problem here is that the ANC literally paid all the tiny parties. But let’s leave Occam out of this & complain about the DA.
Small parties sided with the ANC rather than the DA in eThekwini because of the DA's arrogance - Makhosi Khoza.
Whether you believe the DA is arrogant & out of touch or not, this is how it's gonna be until the old guard in the party is replaced by a more representative team.
Today
@CityofCT
officials began clearing sludge & bullrushes at Rondevlei Nature Reserve in preparation of the vlei draw-down expected to happen later this week.
Here’s why this is important:
1/4 A new Weed Harvester for Zandvlei with more to come!
Today Mayor
@geordinhl
christened the new Zandvlei weed harvester the “Cape Shoveler”.
The vessel will remove aquatic biomass & litter from the Zandvlei estuary & canals to keep it in good condition for people & nature.
This has been an especially long week in politics. The stakes have never been higher for South Africa. Small parties are consumed by chaos & greed.
I am proud of
@Our_DA
for bravely placing principles & values ahead of expediency. Voters see the resolve shown by
@jsteenhuisen
.
An important message from Cape Town Mayor
@geordinhl
.
The DA has zero tolerance for lawlessness. No one has the right to strike violently or shut down the city.
#TaxiStrike
#CommuterSafetyMatters
There were only two Critically Endangered Rondevlei Spiderhead Protea (Serruria foeniculacea) in the 1970s. We restored 150 to Princess Vlei through the local conservation CBO this season. Next year: 1500!Let’s hope the city matches our investment in this site.
@ZahidBadroodien
Cape Town and Paris both have ambitions to clean-up their blue-green spaces for future generations. After meeting with the City of Paris last week I am confident we are heading in the right direction in Cape Town.
This morning I voted for the party that I have loved and served for 15 years,
@Our_DA
and for Chris Pappas as the Premier of KwaZulu-Natal because I believe that they can
#RescueSA
and
#RescueKZN
. Let’s all go and do the same on Wednesday. 🇿🇦🙌
3. 100 years ago this Net Algae was widespread, but not common, on the
#CapeFlats
in seasonal ponds & pans.
These niche habitats are now almost entirely extinct due to urban development & eutrophication.
I’m doing everything I can to help elect Geordin Hill-Lewis the next Mayor of Cape Town.
The mother city deserves a mayor who is young, energetic, formidable and bold.
If you want to see Cape Town do more, and do better,
@geordinhl
is the guy who can get things done!
#LGE2021
I was doing a lunchtime ‘oversight walk’ at Greenpoint Park and met one of the furrier Capetonians! 🦦
This resident is satisfied with
@CityofCT
service delivery & our pond fish supposedly makes top tier sashimi.
#CapeClawlessOtter
Black voters are realigning around the DA. This is why, once all votes are counted, it seems the DA will be the only incumbent party to grow or hold in almost every provinces.
A silver lining for the future, as new entrants will likely underperform in coming electoral cycles.
The DA has actually *increased* its support among black voters. Kinda hoped the perils of data-free analysis would be clear after the past few days, but silly me.
The
@CityofCT
is probably the only African city government with a programme to leave the environment better off than how we found it.
We are doing this through massive wastewater infrastructure upgrades & game-changer catchment rehabilitation projects.
#GenerationRestoration
It’s been a good year for the DA in Ward 57 (Observatory). We grew our branch & have been warmly received by local businesses, community groups and individuals.
Proud of this team.
A quarter of a million more Capetonians have work today than just a year ago. -
@geordinhl
Cape Town is the only big city in the country that is growing. You know who to vote for.
Die Eersterivier wat met krag in die middel van Stellenbosch stad loop!
Wonderlik om nuut geïnstalleerde infrastruktuur vir vloedvermindering te sien. Die water loop skoon waar die DA regeer! 💧

I spent the afternoon with the DA Students Organisation at UCT. I am blown away by the many students who are committing to support the DA in the 2024 election.
Something is happening on the ground that political commentators do not see.
Watch us grow! 🇿🇦
Honoured to be taking my seat as a
@CityofCT
@Our_DA
councillor today. We are about to elect
@geordinhl
- the youngest mayor in the history of the city!
What nonsense! This was a wasteland & deadzone just 4km from the CBD.
Now there will be:
- Key new public transport infrastructure
- 5200 construction jobs
- 19 000 employment opportunities (many youth jobs)
- Huge River rehabilitation
- High quality Public open space
@askashbroker
That’s what happens when you build headquarters where people don’t need jobs. This should have never been built in this area but then again our people are failing to properly run cities in other provinces such as KZN-Durban which would have also been ideal for this…
Instead of peddling misinformation that is detrimental to ecotourism businesses, check your facts.
No solids go into the ocean through the marine outfall. The screen is 3mm!
Talk about poo on the face 🙄
Great to campaign on home turf in Fairways & Parkwood today. The southern suburbs of Cape Town is voting to re-elect
