Milton is the only category 5 hurricane in Atlantic records (HURDATv2, 1851-present) to have any sort of a southeasterly motion vector:

Our work provides evidence that storm-resolving resolution may help us better understand the role of tropical storms in the climate system and predict their behavior in a warming climate.

#2 The observed relationship between high intensification rate and small inner-core size ('pinhole eye') is also captured reasonably well

We analysed in two fully coupled global climate models with atmospheric resolutions ~5 km. Our paper presents two key findings. #1 Tropical cyclone intensification rates are close to those observed in the real world, rapid intensification is captured

Simulating strong tropical storms with climate models is challenging because important processes that act to intensify a storm occur over spatial scales that are too small for global models to capture. Typical models lack sufficient resolution in the atmosphere and ocean.

A successful launch for the #EarthCARE satellite! First conceived 30 years ago at @UniofReading, it will gather vital information about clouds & aerosols which will help us improve weather forecasts & climate models. Well done everyone involved! https://t.co/HI4bsnfCVM

In state-of-the-art #climate models, with resolutions of just a few km, simulated tropical #cyclones are much more like those in the real world. I've written about this new research in a blog for the @nextgems_eu project. https://t.co/arNV9ODKgW
