Nevertheless, this new approach to studying symbiosis offers a novel pathway to reconstruct paleo-symbiosis in extinct foraminifera—an essential piece of information for interpreting numerous geochemical proxies.

However, we also show that this relationship can be more complex in regions with strong environmental gradients, where additional factors influence nitrogen isotopes.

In this study we show that foraminifera-bound nitrogen isotopes (FB-δ15N) distinguish between symbiont-bearing and symbiont-barren foraminifera. FB-δ15N shows a clear signal of dinoflagellate symbiosis and may even identify other symbionts like chrysophytes or pelagophytes.

Great first two days at the #PAGES_PO2_workshop in Bristol with interesting talks about FB-N-isotopes by Alfredo Martínez-García, thallium isotopes by Yi Wang and ocean oxygenation models by Juan Muglia and Katrin Meissner (so captivating that even pigeons attended the session!)

Why do we care? Nitrogen fixation supplies the ocean with bioavailable nitrogen, which is a crucial nutrient for many organisms. So to better understand how Nitrogen fixation works and changes through time is a big plus! :)

Why is that? Shelf sedimentary denitrification supplies waters with proportionally higher amounts of phosphorous (vs. N) to the ocean, fuelling N-fixation. Glacials -> low sea level -> subaerial shelves -> low sedimentary denitrification -> low P supply to gyre -> low N-fixation

What did we find? We found a reduction in N-fixation in the Atlantic Ocean during ice ages that is proportional to sea-level variations in regional shelf areas.

What did we do? We measured foraminifera-bound nitrogen isotopes to reconstruct open ocean Nitrogen fixation over glacial/interglacial cycles.

Forgot to advertise my talk at @egu24, but if you want to chat about foram-bound nitrogen isotopes, oxygen dynamics across the Cenozoic or just catch up, send me an email to arrange a meeting! Will be around until Saturday :)
