I write on immigration but find it hard to answer this question because I don't think it is helpful as a way of framing migration policy. But perhaps I am the problem not the question

In a new blog @alanmanning4 explains why change was needed to the "seriously flawed" social care visa route and how the government now needs to deliver on its promise to make care work a more attractive job. https://t.co/oRKIiub9gj

Labour's immigration White Paper has proposed closing the social care visa route for workers from overseas. This was a needed change to a flawed system.

Important view to air even if disagree. It basically argues for Dubai economic model w/out saying so explicitly. These arguments normally assume (a) more care jobs in future (v likely) and (b) care jobs can't offer competitive pay (discuss) https://t.co/aCdECA0wI0 via @ft

The option of temporary worker contracts is not embraced by either side but it may be the solution

This is unusually poor and one-sided from @TheIFS . There are risks but also strong case that market provides too low a level of benefits when employers have market power https://t.co/I5JPLNHFWz via @TheIFS

Doesn't even define low migration or say what policy should be in practice. This fluff comforts many progressive readers, provides zero challenge to them. I worry this thinking leads to Nigel Farage winning the 2029 election. Please up your game https://t.co/g673J615Lr via @ft

The next government must realise that a managed and open policy is essential for long-term growth

If that’s too abstract, I open the chapter on work in ‘Great Britain?’ with a story about the real world impact of treating far too many workers without dignity and respect. Here it is.

Let's do it! I'm attracted to the idea of employment contracts having to contain minimum guaranteed earnings but may be better ideas https://t.co/af6h1hB7ZK via @ft

These arrangements remain a blight on Britain’s labour market

Or, if shy, you can look up their job ads. Not sure but I think it might be this company. If it is they are paying 6p more than the NMW and lower than most supermarket checkout jobs. I just don't understand why employer claims get so little push-back from journalists /end

Whenever an employer tells you salary is irrelevant for their recruitment problem, the journalist's next question should be how much they pay /2

Article mentions lump of labour fallacy as reason why immigration doesn't cause unemployment. Great. Better then most articles. But then assumes the fallacy when discussing immigration as solution to vacancies. The lump of labour fallacy cuts both ways /1

Political leaders are agreed on a ‘Brits first’ employment policy. But are firms really hiring too many foreign nationals?
