ACIP voted unanimously yes here, which seems to protect coverage of Covid shots for all while only recommending it strongly for those over 65. Not clear to me how this interacts with the FDA labeling, which is more restrictive. @doritmi

ICYMI: #HHS has been circulating an FAQ explaining why Kennedy unilaterally dropped recommendations that kids & pregnant people get #Covid shots. It cites studies. But the studies it cites to suggest dangers of getting the shot during pregnancy dispel that claim.

This is the big one: Kennedy is firing the entire #ACIP in a move he says is needed to restore confidence in vaccines. "It scares me to think of what’s ahead,” Mike Osterholm of CIDRAP told me.

Calling medical journals "corrupt," Kennedy says gov't scientists may be barred from publishing in Lancet, NEJM, etc going forward. #NIH may establish its own journals, he said. Meanwhile #CDC 's Emerging Infectious Diseases journal is on the budget chopping block.

The criticism of The Lancet, NEJM and JAMA is not new, but the health secretary may use his position to influence research that journals publish.Β Β

My colleague Lev Facher hit the road following Secretary Kennedy's MAHA tour. Among other things, Kennedy bragged about how well the response to the ongoing #measles outbreak, which has claimed 3 lives, is going.

New from @statnews: On RFK Jr.'s road show out west, MAHA goals take precedence. Measles prevention less so. https://t.co/k3VqJy9kI4

US government funding has brought cancer science to the point where new discoveries are accelerating & the stage was set for major gains over the coming decade. But deep & puzzling cuts instigated by the new administration are throwing all that into doubt, @angRchen reports.

For a long time, food and medicines in this country were extremely toxic. Like, actually murderous. Despite that, progress in regulating them was very slow and arduous work. The FDA isn’t perfect. But wow do we need it. Here’s a thread on its history and what existed before πŸ‘‡

How much do you know about food and drug safety? Where did our current regulations come from? And what were some of the greatest scandals that forced change? We covered everything from swill milk, patent medicines, and thalidomide in our class today. Here's what we covered 🧡

Wastewater testing for #H5N1 #birdflu is about to go next level in a 190-site network operated by scientists from Stanford, Emory and Verily Life Sciences, @MeganMolteni reports. Instead of just searching for flu A viruses, they'll search for H5.

Last week I went to Texas β€” ground 0 for the bird flu spreading across the U.S. β€” to buy raw milk and test it for the flu. Why? Feds have advised against drinking raw milk amidst this outbreak but the milk is still for sale. What’s the risk to consumers? We could find out…

I talked to a group of newly unionized physicians at Salem Hospital who are deeply concerned about how for-profit practices are affecting patient care. An increasing focus on generating revenue has brought some of them to the breaking point.
