In November, Massachusetts will decide whether tipped workers should make $15/hour in base wages, rather than the current $6.75 rate. The Globe asked 40+ servers, bartenders, and restauranteurs what they think of the ballot question:

"They just put on the wool and they went out and did their business.” @fonseca_esq captures the sweat-soaked dedication of historical reeanactors working through a heat wave.

Sometimes success in work doesn’t come from success in school. I recently talked to a number of local leaders who struggled to get through school – some who never made it through college – and came out just fine on the other side.

Lousy grades or a lack of college degree — or a long, winding road through higher education — haven’t kept accomplished locals from having meaningful careers.

I talked to a group of newly unionized physicians at Salem Hospital who are deeply concerned about how for-profit practices are affecting patient care. An increasing focus on generating revenue has brought some of them to the breaking point.

Embedded in this harrowing story about a seemingly impossible path to homeownership is some seriously dire data.

I'm so honored that Nereida Badillo allowed me to share her story, and that of so many other members of the Puerto Rican community in Holyoke. She wanted to give a voice to Latinos in Massachusetts who have struggled, and strived, like she has.

Like others in this city’s large Puerto Rican community, Nereida Badillo longed for a more stable life. But history is difficult to overcome.

Across Massachusetts, people are rising up against the arrival of migrants. To some, the backlash seems racist. Such a powerful story by @Draillih.

Some residents are complaining about the staggering costs of caring for migrants in their towns and warning about crime and too much change.

Some tough news: The Medieval Times union campaign is over. Despite organizing two castles, workers struggled to win contracts and were facing decertification campaigns. The union just informed the company they’re throwing in the towel. https://t.co/8Yx9VkLfsk

Deed restrictions stating that “no person of other than the Caucasian race" can buy homes could provide legal justification for special bank loans to combat the damage these covenants have done, via @MiltonValencia.
bostonglobe.com
The racist practice played a large part in why so much of the state is segregated along racial lines, with economic disparities that still resonate.
