I see that @RenPhil21 is scouting for someone to build their portfolio in global health & dev: Looks like a dream role. If you're familiar with the team/open to sharing thoughts on what makes a good application, please reach out! Coffee on me.

As I engage with more impact/causal inference style data, it’s so clear to me that there’s still incredible value in simple descriptive accounts that ask + verify the most fundamental questions about the system you’re studying.

Last week, some GiveWell colleagues and I spent a few days in eastern Uganda - trying to learn more about how the health system works. A 🧵with some rough notes and takeaways.

Dean Karlan's spent his career obsessing over a development economics question: How can we actually test what works? . For the past two years, his job was to make USAID more efficient — to get the maximum value out of each dollar. Then came DOGE.

There’s this style of “deep” personal interrogation where Person 1 just keeps firing “hard‑hitting” questions, trying to push Person 2 into some childhood‑shame aha moment. It seems like the worst way to get at any truth - attaching meaning to words w/o context to diagnose trauma.

Recently, I've been digging up strangers' PhD dissertations to read the acknowledgment section. Couple pages of the most sincere and romantic text you'll find about what makes them tick.Highly recommend if you want a feel-good read that doesn't require a functional attention span.

I wrote a piece. Ended up reading more as an advice column for caregivers/patient attendants in Indian hospitals. Anyone want to give feedback? .I'm also curious to know how folks branch out re style. I feel like I'm comfy writing a certain way, everything else feels too hard.

I’ve spent the past week in and out of the ICU (as a family member), and not only is the info asymmetry insane, accessing any realtime info is only possible if you have leverage, money, and insider contacts. This is pervasive+gatekeeping is intentional. Should write about it.

When I was with her in the ICU the past week, I kept thinking about all that she had given me and all that she won't get to see. I don’t know much about the future, but I know my Sundays, much like today, will be quieter with one fewer call.

That teaches you what it means to be deeply okay with your flaws because someone cares about you so obviously despite them. I cannot begin to explain what a privilege it is to be loved like that. (6/n).

We’ve had our fair share of screaming matches, but I have never once questioned that she loved me through it all. (5/n).

Another habit of hers, I think, is simply loving. She’s one of the most resilient people I know, but the resilience isn’t a hard shell - it’s soft, a little gooey, with a rich sweet tooth and an ability to forgive. She loved as she breathed, without thinking, by habit. (4/n).

She’s a woman of habits. Coffee first thing in the morning, a prayer after her shower, breakfast at 9 am, two Tamil serials on Sun TV before lunch, lunch, a nap, and then the TV again. If you tell her you’re worried about something, she will pray for you. (3/n).

If you told her you were busy, she’d remember to dial again in the evening. There was a standard set of questions to answer, including what you had just eaten for breakfast. She always ended the call with, “Have a nice day.” (2/n).

I think experiencing unconditional love changes you. My paati - my maternal grandma, has a ritual she is proud of. Every Sunday morning she called her eight grandchildren. If you missed the call, she’d ring four or five more times until you picked up. (1/n).
