I’m healthier than I used to be. I’m healed, I’m happy. I don’t rely on substances to get through my days. I am with someone I adore, and I can pour all my love into him and his kids. I hope that now I would be making my dad and grandfather proud. I’ll never know, but I hope. -

I never made up with my dad, and then he was gone. I never really appreciated my grandfather until his last year on earth. All this to say, please tell the men you love in your life you care. Be gritty. Be emotional. Be real. I loved them way too late. However… 6/???

…when he caught me in the kitchen drinking his alcohol. He asked me what I was doing. He was the first person I admitted to that I was alcoholic. Instead of judging me or berating me, he got his own shot glass out and asked me to pour him one. Maybe wasn’t totally right 4/???

I struggled a lot after my father died. I hated him for most of my life. I hated that he loved drugs and sex more than me. I hated that he didn’t love me enough to stop hurting himself. Ruining himself. The last real conversation I had with my grandfather was 3/???

…an officer came to our house and announced my father was dead. All I could think was: “Happy fucking birthday to us.” My grandfather and I celebrated one last birthday after that. He died the following November. 2/???
