This soldier worked on his mother Maggie's farm before the war, and then returned to it afterwards. So I guess for some people they *are* going to work on Maggie's farm some more

Simulated Annealing: a stochastic optimization method inspired by nature. As "temperature" decreases, random fluctuations (that allow it to escape local minima/maxima) decrease and the particle resorts to hillclimbing. No gradient calculation required. #RStats #rayshader

Spent my Friday vacation writing this up, after struggling with HMC for years. Would this be useful to anyone else or other references are sufficient for most people?

Thanks to the invitation of @adam_slez and Yingyao Wang, I will also workshop my article on elite politics in China's reform era at UVA. It integrates micro-sociology and network analysis to explain elite conflicts, including the 1989 power collision. Email me if you want a copy!

I don't do conjoint survey experiments, but I'm aware that they are becoming increasingly popular in sociology. Interested parties might want to check out this new piece from Gary King and company.

New Paper: We show that about half of conjoint survey datasets is measurement error, which can bias estimates in any direction by any amount. We also provide an easy way to correct the bias: https://t.co/DAnonnkFOR w/@katie_clayton14 @YusakuHoriuchi @aaronrkaufman & @MayyaKomis

The link from Henry VIII to the Industrial Revolution. The monasteries dissolved in 1536 had no feudal lords, so the farmers that occupied them became the gentry who led to innovation & reform More monasteries in an area= more factories 3 centuries later. https://t.co/bxJoo26QJS

First semester as DGS is in the books. It was a long one, but with the work of lots of people we managed to expand funding for our amazing grads. I also did a better job at sleeping and taking care of myself. My plans for break include lifting weights and reading Capital!

Publication day! This one was a long time in the making. Even if you aren't into 19th century populism, you might be interested in random effects eigenvector spatial filtering, which is a nice alternative to classical geographically weighted regression. https://t.co/HNFRUm3xiy

Going to try and work my way through this one today. Say what you will about sound quality, but the energy on the Capitol Theater AUDs from 1970 is off the charts. It is absolutely part of the listening experience for me. Wouldn't trade it for anything! https://t.co/colVufD47Q

I want to second this. The thing that I like best about the outline is that it is organized into the rhetorical tasks required to get a reader on the hook without essentializing things like THE literature review or THE theory section.

Every time I write a paper, I pull up @JessicaCalarco's "article writing 101" outline. Although designed for qualitative work, I find it super useful for writing quantitative papers too.
