In the storm-tossed Chilean sea lives the rosy conger, giant eel of snowy flesh. And in Chilean stewpots, along the coast, was born the chowder, thick and succulent, a boon to man... - Oda al Caldillo de Congrio, Pablo Neruda: https://t.co/ZMfpxaUhKi 🎥: #ChileMargin2026

Recognizing the importance of seeps & the potential for further seep discovery, a team from @msstate has been developing an efficient & cost-effective machine learning-based system to automatically detect seafloor gas seeps in water column data. https://t.co/iI2tzY5tn9

I was running a seafloor mapping survey with ROV SuBastian when we happened upon this amazing creature. Needless to say, we paused the survey to allow the immensely talented ROV pilots to capture this spellbinding video.
Gonatus onyx is one of few squids that brood eggs. A female carries her egg sac for months, going w/o feeding-by the time they hatch she will be close to death. She pumps water around eggs to keep oxygenated; also helps mature hatchings break free. #ChileanMargin2024 expedition

Something is pumping out large amounts of oxygen at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean, at depths where a total lack of sunlight makes photosynthesis impossible

Nature - A chemical reaction could be producing oxygen by splitting water molecules, but its source of energy remains unknown.

🌊 Happy #WorldHydrographyDay What better time to reveal that... 26.1% of the ocean has now been mapped! 📢 An additional 4.34 million square kilometres of new data (equating to an area the size of the European Union) has been added to the definitive map of the seabed!

During the #AtacamaTrenchAncients expedition, searching for tiny bubbles of methane percolating from seafloor in the deep Ocean takes a dedicated team of scientists & engineers, a robotic guide, and a healthy dose of patience and persistence. Full video: https://t.co/y1jNqgE1br

Despite its importance, the majority of our ocean is largely unknown. "A single project, a single nation, a single group can't do it alone. We have to build this map together," says @columbiaclimate Lamont marine geophysicist @drthevic. Via @oceanexplorer. https://t.co/JvPIzCGAMg
