Pre modern armies during their long marches and maneuvers before a pitched battle would frequently spend their time burning down/pillaging towns and fields and expelling/enslaving/massacring their inhabitants.
It would be cool if we could go back to the days when two armies just fought each other and that was that instead of watching thousands of civilians endure immolation from the sky every week and pretend as if this is just how war is now.
