A thread about what is wrong with the influence of Elon Musk and other tech billionaires. Another thread about content moderation will follow later this week. Obviously, the problem isn’t that Musk is expressing his opinions, which is his freedom of speech. It isn’t that Musk has

Thrilled to share the final version of our study of Black-white wealth differences in the US dating back to before the Civil War. Bigger & better, w/ 2X the data, + appendices where we explore key related Qs -- the role of racial violence, conditional gaps, immigration, etc.
Recently accepted by #QJE, “Wealth of Two Nations: The U.S. Racial Wealth Gap, 1860-2020,” by Derenoncourt (@EDerenoncourt), Kim (@ckim_econ), Kuhn (@kuhnmo), and Schularick (@Mschularick):

10 Favourite Economics Books 1) Inequality - Tony Atkinson Absolutely THE book on inequality and what can be done about it. Atkinson was a giant in the profession and this book reflects this, covering everything from tech to tax. Incredible considering its moderate length.

From a referee report: "I found the manuscript difficult to read mostly because it does not read like an econometrics article, rather it reads like a detective novel." The next step in my career seems pretty clear. Don't try to stop me.

And now those climate scientists are watching in disbelief as people say climate change is not an existential risk but AI is. SMH.
This is made even more frustrating by the fact that I've seen other movements with similar urgent social charges (ie climate change, discrimination) toil for years to substantiate their claims materially, because they had a fraction of the capital & social levers EAs now have.

Informative piece on greenwashing by @antarabaruah__. On carbon offsets by big companies, she notes that Carbon Market Watch’s policy director says, “…, we would need a second planet Earth to absorb global emissions if everyone decided to offset like these corporations”.

Saw @ElifKubilay present cool RCT @LBS. Training 4th–5th grade kids in taking the other person’s perspective greatly reduced violence and victimization in the classroom, and increased x-ethnic friendships, in Turkish schools close to the Syrian border. https://t.co/w3bXmqe520

Local governments govern U.S. suburbs. Each one could use *zoning powers* to block affordable homes for newcomers, if residents wanted. But how much of zoning today is *exclusionary*? When would it have started? Why did it happen? Follow 🧵for answers in my job market paper...
