Last week, President Trump issued a national security memorandum that opens the door to investigation and surveillance of Americans based on their political beliefs. For @BLaw, I wrote about this dangerous effort to collapse the distinction between speech and violence:

They displayed anti-Trump buttons — then the sheriff alerted Secret Service https://t.co/KvMRsGcPfQ via @TheFIREorg

Ohio officials booted Democrats from a fair and called the Secret Service — over anti-Trump buttons. Now, they’re facing a First Amendment reckoning.

The sheriff said the post caused “mass hysteria” among parents and teachers. The school district doesn’t have a single record about it.
Some insisted there had to be more to this story. He couldn't have been arrested just for posting a political meme. But he was. And now the sheriff admits to illegally withholding public records about the case.

Agree with Luke (former grad student at Harvard) - This feeds the most damaging anti-science narratives.
The editors at @Nature must be living in an alternate universe to think this is going to help the credibility of science in any way. Just say no.

This man remains in custody on a $2,000,000 bond for posting a political meme in a discussion about a Charlie Kirk vigil. However much offense it caused, there's no serious argument it was a threat. It's hard to see the arrest and charges as anything but politically motivated.

Good legal explanation from Grok about reporting public sightings of law enforcement. And, as Grok reminds us, disagreeing with someone's views doesn't warrant a lobotomy.

VICTORY: West Caldwell, NJ has officially withdrawn its proposal requiring protesters to get a permit 30 days in advance and carry $2M in insurance. After FIRE advocacy and community pushback, the council unanimously pulled the ordinance. Free speech should never have a price.
Last week, 300+ New Jersey residents packed a council meeting to defend their First Amendment rights after a township proposed a law requiring protesters to secure a permit 30 days in advance and $2 million in insurance coverage. With FIRE’s help, the community stood strong. ⬇️

There had to be a moment, while one of the cops was leaning on a giant inflatable testicle and it bulged out from under his arm, that he wondered what he was doing with his life.

An academic freedom org suggests it's bad to defend free speech or academic freedom for anyone it deems a "right-wing ideologue."
@glukianoff 🥱 Oh Greg, there’s got to be right wing ideologue, Young Americans for Liberty, or Turning Point USA chapter out there that needs your urgent support…

This job ad makes clear that ideology is more important than scholarship at the University of Pittsburgh School of Social Work: “Regardless of substantive focus, we seek colleagues who embrace and amplify our school’s commitment to anti-racism, anti-oppression, collaborative

MUST WATCH: Revoked visas. Deportations. A Red Scare law revived. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio says noncitizens don’t have First Amendment rights. Is he right? This is "1AX: Immigration," a FIRE original documentary, featuring @NicoPerrino, @DavidAFrench, and @JMchangama.

The idea that corporations enjoy first amendment rights is, in most situations, utterly uncontroversial. Can Congress direct the content of movies and video games? Can it prohibit Reebok from criticizing Nike?

That speech can serve a legitimate purpose like facilitating the ability of others to observe law enforcement activity and document potential misconduct.

The thing is, the administration has rendered the term "doxxing" almost meaningless by applying it to a range of constitutionally protected speech, such as noting the presence of law enforcement agents performing their duties in public.
Anti-ICE radicals are using social media apps to dox, threaten, and terrorize the brave men and women of ICE and their families. Today, thanks to @POTUS Trump’s @TheJusticeDept under the leadership of @AGPamBondi, Facebook removed a large page being used to dox and threaten our

Update: VETOED. Today, Gov. Gavin Newsom vetoed SB 771, a bill that would have had a profound chilling effect over online expression. We are grateful that the governor chose to protect free speech instead of setting California on the path to a losing battle against the First
SB 771 would make it too risky for platforms to host controversial & offensive speech. That's not a side effect—it's the bill's purpose. The First Amendment doesn't allow government silence speech it can't ban by imposing expansive liability. Gov. Newsom must veto. Link ⤵️

Once again, noting the publicly observable location of unidentified law enforcement agents is by no stretch of the imagination "doxxing," nor does it fall in any category of unprotected speech.
Received from a follower in Chicago. I’m told this is going on all day on @ring. Ring is complicit in doxxing ICE agents’ live locations. This potentially helps illegals evade arrest and puts agents in harm’s way. This is not ok. @ICEgov @DHSgov
