To get involved, please find your local @PAKPAC chapter and start making calls to your local congressional reps. Supporting HR 5271 should not be controversial or difficult for anyone who cares about progress in Pakistan. End.

It is very likely that Pakistanis will care for or remember A Munir about as much as they care for or remember Generals Bajwa, Kayani, even Sharif etc. However the effects of good US policy that encourages democratic and human dev will be felt by both the US and Pak for decades.

HR 5271 is very smartly drafted by @RepHuizenga and his staffers. Let’s remember that good policy will outlast US administrations and Pakistani governments. The military/ PML N government is notching some wins, but they have all the hollowness of a staged photo op.

Thanks to the efforts of @PAKPAC leadership and @UzmaDo as well membership at large, we have 18 bipartisan cosponsors or signatories, of which 11 are on the foreign relations committee. There are no names in this bill because it is meant to transcend the current policies crisis.

The bill begins with a brief background on the current political crisis. The important parts are sections 2 and 3. Section 2 lays out foundational US policy and calls for it to be rooted in support of democratic norms and processes in Pakistan.

It is clear that good US policy in Pakistan can set the stage for decades of bilateral engagement. For this to be successful, the political actors in Pakistan need to have political legitimacy with the people of Pakistan. This is precisely the point of HR 5271.

Pakistan can and should aspire to be a regional even global actor but it has to focus on its own development and stop making decisions that make it look like another 3rd world “shithole” (President Trumps term not mine). Its approach to political dissent/minorty rights is key.

The Pak military demonstrated a high degree of competence in the recent war with India, largely due to the PAF. The military is an important asset for the people of Pakistan and should be honored and protected. It should never be used to suppress political dissent.

There is no question that Pakistan’s current political environment is manufactured and stage managed by the military establishment (Bajwa/Munir). The mil establishment has a dismal record of delivering basic human development to the people of Pak. This cannot be overstated.

In contrast, the Pakistani American diaspora overwhelmingly supports a transparent and level playing field for political activity, in support of the Pakistani people’s god given freedoms and their political agency.

For decades, US policy in Pakistan and the region has been defined by short term thinking and viewed strictly in the lens of natl security. Paradoxically, this has led to some of the US’s most spectacular and embarrassing policy failures. Think WoT, bin Laden, and the Taliban.

HR 5271 is entitled the Pakistan Freedom and Accountability Act, sponsored by @RepHuizenga out of Michigan. This is the most important policy initiative in the history of the Pakistani American diaspora, and is led by @PAKPAC. Here is a tweetorial on its significance:
