Our paper in @NatureHumBehav examines the #colonial legacy of #herbarium collections - pressed, dried plant specimens that are critical to #biodiversity #conservation #ecology #evolution #science. This was an international collaboration with @ecomodeler and MANY others.
Plant collections (herbaria) are shaped by history. Colonial legacy of this history is evidenced by an inverse relationship between plant diversity in nature and in herbaria:

In a major #biodiversity hotspot, #California, we find that nonnative plants tend to be phenologically and phylogenetically more distant from natives than natives are from each other, but among them, invasive species are closer to natives than non-invasive ones.

Herbaria are important! Our research would be impossible without them.
Dried plants, fungi and algae are portals to our past. @PurdueBPP's Catherine Aime, director of @LifeAtPurdue's Herbaria and president of @MSAFungi, and @DrRabern, curator of fungi, explain the importance of these snapshots of biodiversity across time.
