Important thread re. generation and the pandemic, and again something we’re exploring in our fieldwork. #Covid had profound impacts across generation and this is reflected in moments of intergenerational understanding/solidarity existing alongside discourses of division/tension.

Yet more evidence from ONS of the profound generational imbalance of the economic effects of the pandemic. Of the Feb 2020-Feb 2021 annual decrease in employee jobs (down 693,000 overall) 63.1% (437k) were under 25 25.2% (174k) were 25-34 50-64s? Net increase of 32,000 jobs.

Last week, my university advertised a "pandemic productivity" seminar. Today, I got the "due to unforeseen circumstances" cancellation message. Unforeseen? Really? This little example shows why we need to change the narrative about productivity amid crisis. 🙏🏽 /Thread

“It is a false economy and a catastrophic error to exclude civil society from knowledge and decision making; it undermines trust, which compromises compliance. It squanders communal efforts which people were ready and willing to make.” #soc1027

In the three hours between filing this & it going online, the government has swung in with what we all already knew, that schools will be closed till February. They’re a month behind Mumsnet chat boards, always, on everything

This BBC article (though now out of date in terms of the areas it lists as being in Tier 4) explains what the restrictions are in Tier 4 areas.

Today we remember the 383 men and boys killed in the worst coal mining disaster in English history. The 12th & 13th December 1866 are dark days in Barnsley's history, underground explosions at The Oaks Colliery left few survivors, the youngest victim was just 11 years old.

Struck me while reading this (The Guardian, 12.12.20, Ikea latest firm to suffer shortages and delays due to clogged UK ports) how seldom I have seen the country mapped according to its ports & how revealing crisis becomes in our understanding, experience & knowledge of place 1/2
