It's ok to read a book where characters suffer as long as it is artistically necessary. But if you re-read a book where characters suffer, causing them to suffer again, that's sadism.

In fairness, that'd demand some acceptance that having directly inspired a white supremacist to murder 77 people is the kind of thing that might actually require a bit of reputational repair, whereas for Melanie Phillips having done that *is* her reputation, & what she's paid for.
