Why is athletics so great? Because anything might happen.. tonight Roje Stona who had made no impression previously at this level wins the discus and Kenneth rooks-- only in Paris on WA ranking as he didn't have the standard- gets steeplechase silver๐ฎ๐ฎ!!

KENNETH ROOKS!! This dude is gutsy. Took the lead with a lap to go and dared the best in the world to get him. On paper, he had no business to do that. But we don't run races on paper! The dude has huge balls for doing that. What a run. America is on fire!

An excellent run by Kenneth Rooks of the USA to take silver in the 3000m Steeplechase running a huge 9 sec PB. It's worth noting that he qualified via a world rankings position, just showing that anything can happen.

Hey guys @XUK. We've been locked out of our @AthleticsWeekly (verified, a business account and with over 100k followers) handle and had to submit ID to @X to showcase we're older than 13. How quickly can this be resolved? We desperately need it back with the Olympics soon.

๐ธ๐ช Update: Athletes Emil Bengtson, Sara Lennman, Yolanda Ngarambe, Leo Magnusson, Simon Sundstrรถm and Rebecka Hallerth are filing a case against the Swedish Olympic Team in the Court of Arbitration for Sport. More details here in the GoFundMe to help back their case:
โEnough is enough. Stop with the age discrimination (the 25 and under age criteria). Stop with the nonsense (top 12 criteria). Please make it clear on how to get selected for the Games! Itโs not only a shame, but bizarre that @SWEOlympic, would choose to have zero Swedeโs in the

@lisanandy please help - our athletes have qualified but are not being allowed to compete at the Olympics ๐ญ itโs completely unjust after they have trained so hard ๐คฌ Pls help @jessphillips @ChiOnwurah cc @_PhilNorman @JadeLallyOly
We knew it was coming but this from @BritAthletics is not only a total disgrace but shows demonstrable discriminatory bias against field athletes. And when are @WorldAthletics going to step in? This goes against not only the ethos of their qualifying system but also our sport.

I'd argue the fact that we as athletes had inspired the nation with our performances and would carry on to do so at the Olympics. You have single handedly taken away their inspiration.

A great thread.
Setting excessively high standards to force people to "raise the bar" of performance is appealing But if we look at 20+ years of countries doing this in track & it failing to have an impact/mostly discouraging athletes The model to follow is the US system: give people a chance!

This article is actually laughable and beyond disrespectful to all athletes, not just elite athletes. Majority of the people in these positions couldnโt run for a bus. Youโre broke as hell and thatโs the sole reason. Millions & millions of loses year in, year out. Itโs pathetic.
โSetting tough standards helps improve performance levels,โ writes UK Athletics chair Ian Beattie as he outlines the reasoning behind the governing bodyโs strict policy. https://t.co/3XxGN9FliF
