BJJ tournaments are intimidating. I chatted with @calebmontiveros about his experience competing for the first time as a white belt, and how we can apply Stoicism to high stress situations.

New Stoa Conversation. @calebmontiveros and @_MikeTremblay talk about Caleb’s first martial arts BJJ competition. It was a good stress test for Stoic ideas. They talk about what works, what doesn’t, and how to use Stoicism in high-pressure situations.

Does contemporary philosophy have any compelling solutions to the “Is/ought” gap in ethics? (That no descriptive statements can generate normative claims without a jump in reasoning). Did we ever solve that one? . It definitely still bugs me.

What all of these exercises have in common, is that they are ways of training your perspective. You don't need any equipment, or much training, to begin to practice them. How we interpret the world is a key part of how we live, so we need to develop that skill intentionally.

5. Circumscribe the present: Let the past go, the future be, and focus on the present. Real calm, the Stoics said, comes from an ability to be present in the moment. As Seneca put it: "We suffer more in imagination than in reality". Don't regret the past or fear the future.

4. View from above: Look down on your life from a larger vantage point. Sometimes we exaggerate our suffering. To gain perspective, think about the world as if looking down from above, like an astronaut viewing earth as a sphere. Some things are not as important as they seem.

3. Premeditatio Malorum: Visualize how things may go wrong. Act well regardless. If we anticipate the worst, we can never be caught off-guard. This is not the same as assuming the worst. Stoics are not cynical. But we should never be unprepared for what is possible.

2. Memento Mori: Meditate on mortality. In ordinary life, it is easy to forget the fact that we will die. Many people forget on purpose. But the Stoics saw that recognizing death was a positive. We can be more grateful for what we have, and more resilient to death when comes.

1. Dichotomy of Control: Focus your perspective on what is up to you. Epictetus taught that all things are either up to us, or not. If we try to control the things not up to us, we will be anxious and suffer. Instead we should focus on our character, which is up to us.
