Our findings highlight the complex dynamics at play in intergenerational relationships and suggest that simply being closer to family isn’t always beneficial for mental health. The findings urge for more research incorporating dynamic perspectives.

We found weak evidence of a mobilization effect: parents' depressive symptoms, especially in fathers, may lead to greater proximity and coresidence. However, there was no evidence that increased proximity reduces depressive symptoms (social support effect).

Using dynamic panel models with fixed effects we identified a clear social breakdown effect, where transitions to coresidence can negatively impact depressive symptoms, especially among Whites and fathers.
