Australian Open men’s singles finals day. My favourite day of the tennis calendar. Since 2012 as is tradition the family and tennis loving friends get together we start with mimosas and breakfast, before a potjie lunch after the conclusion of the final. What a time to be alive

As our tennis courts, more and more, seem to make way for Padel and Pickleball, great to see a young South African from St Stithians win the Aussie Open Boys doubles with his Bulgarian partner. Congrats to Connor Doig and, also, well done on a very gracious winners speech.

Remember the halcyon days of sports games named after its great/pre-eminent players. Brian Lara Cricket, Tony Hawks Pro Skater, Tiger Woods Golf. And then there was Tommy Haas Tennis 🤣

Ta Hash’s super bower in white ball cricket was his ability to score off every delivery. I distinctly remember an ODI innings quite early in his career he was 70 odd not out with only two fours but was going at a run a ball. He’d only faced two dot balls at that point
Hashim Amla was never a slogger, nor a power hitter but still his SR in t20i was 133 till 2018 when 125SR was good enough. In IPL his SR was 142 with an avg of 44,I guess for Punjab. In the last 2 years of his t20i career his avg was 40+ with an SR of 148.

If Novak wins tomorrow I genuinely think he’ll walk off into the sunset. What a perfect ending that would be, at his house

One of the most amazing sports statistics: Aryna Sabalenka has won at least one set in 110 straight Grand Slam matches The next-longest active streak by a woman is 12 Federer, Nadal, nor Djokovic ever had a streak this long You literally can't blow her out. What a player

I’ve repeatedly said AO 2023 the best major women’s final since Covid and that must’ve been absolutely crushing for Rybakina. Today may not have hit the peaks of that final’s drama, but surely has banished the memories of that night in Melbourne. Elena Rybakina, take a bow
