PhD Success Tip: One mentor isn't enough. You need more people to support your success. Ex: Senior mentors and administrators understand politics, career strategy. But someone closer to your level has fresh insights on challenges and supports. @OpenAcademics @PhD_Genie

No single person can meet all of the mentoring needs of another individual. It's actually good mentoring to know when someone else would be more helpful and to help a mentee connect with that person. Delegating mentoring is still mentoring.

Academia is filled with failure, rejection, and all sorts of other nonsense. One of the most important pieces of advice I've received is to build a network of people who are ambitious but authentic, celebrate together in your successes, and support each other in your struggles.

Been trying to explain this to students for years... While they are often skeptical, now there is credible evidence that my posting slides only AFTER the lecture is good pedagogical practice.

Giving students access to class slides before class might seem helpful but hurts learning, according to multiple studies & experiments. Having slides in advance lowers note-taking, attendance, and overall class performance. (Of course, this must be balanced with accommodation)

An important response to the opioid crisis is increasing the number of patients treated with buprenorphine. Many initiatives seek to lower barriers to a clinician first prescribing. But less is known about if clinicians keep prescribing 1/7

Today in the @NewYorker, I share a story that is raw & vulnerable- mostly in hopes that it will help someone who has been through the same, & that possibly, some day, it will help my kids to understand what it all meant. Full story can be found here: https://t.co/SSHZ4K4H75

Vulnerability is not the opposite of resilience. Vulnerability builds resilience. Projecting perfection protects your ego but shuts people out and stunts your growth. Revealing struggles shows humility and humanity, opening the door to new sources of support and strength.

When you need to prepare a manuscript, grant application, report, talk, poster, or anything else, asking others for examples may feel like it signals a lack of expertise, but in reality it signals leadership and professionalism. Experts know how beneficial these examples can be.
