For example, our transcriptions of 5 million (!) handwritten pages from the VOC archives will make it easier to find references to enslaved people. This information can then be used by the Exploring Slave Trade in Asia project @ESTA_IISG to reconstruct the Asian slave trade (5/6).

In our effort at @_GLOBALISE to make these archives more researchable, we also want to facilitate research about enslavement in the Indian Ocean World. (4/6).

From as early as 1619, the VOC dispatched ships to the island of Solor to ‘buy as many slaves as possible’. (3/6)

Slavery is ubiquitous in the pages of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) archives. The VOC traded in enslaved people and relied on enslaved labour in their settlements in the Indian Ocean World. (2/6).

Tomorrow is Keti Koti - a day to commemorate and celebrate the abolition of slavery in Surinam and the former Dutch Antilles. (1/6).

It was an engaging and productive afternoon at the GLOBALISE datasprint, with three groups working on 📍georeferencing historical maps (addictive!), 🏡annotating objects on maps, and 💾adding data on historical locations to the @WHGazetteer!
