Johnson now saying protesters should give the mayor 24 hrs to get it down. He says if it’s not down by Tuesday morning, they’ll come back at 12 noon to attempt to bring it down.

People are dying because of inadequate sex education. These efforts to arrest teachers for teaching children comprehensive sex ed are reprehensible.
@AbbeyCrain
I am a back shower-enterer. Getting in at the front sounds like a great way to get a face full of water and/or water in my hair that I’m not washing that day.
Protesters ask for resignations, a citizen review board and for galleria boulevard to be named for E.J. Bradford Jr. Thet say they will make it “uncomfortable” for people to shop in Hoover.
An interesting social distancing tactic by my local Publix: all the aisles are one-way. Just got turned around by a worker tell me I’m going the wrong way down the aisle. I think we should keep this.
This is the most vulnerable post I've ever written. I've only shared this story with a handful of people.
I'm sharing it because I believe there is power in telling your story. It is only by sharing our deep, human experiences that we change the world.
You can't tie a dog to a fixed point in Birmingham anymore. "If you aren’t willing to responsibly take care of your animal you shouldn’t have one and we want to make that clear in the city’s code," said Councilor Hunter Williams.
The Birmingham City School Board just unanimously approved the consent agenda, therefore approving the termination of two lease agreements with Church of the Highlands. There was no discussion, as is typical with consent items.
I have a copy of a 2000(c) Alabama history book. It’s the book I used at my school for fourth grade Alabama history. I’m referencing it for something I’m working on.
Send me a topic and tweet the pages of the textbook that address this topic.
Protesters say they will speak at the Hoover City Council meeting during the public comment time tonight. They’re here now. I can see seven cops in here now.
Hi everyone. I am one of the Reckon staff laid off due to some budget cuts.
Today I was supposed to publish the newsletter marking one year of Matter of Faith, but no one will get to read it or see the art my coworkers made for it.
Rest assured I'll keep writing.
Well I did it y'all. I ran 50 miles. This was my second 50 mile race. The finish line smile came at the expense of some real lows. Pictured on the right is me willing myself to swallow potato chips while contemplating what to do about some mad chafing.
I just want to say that I do not mind hearing your kids or your weird husband or your dogs in the background on phone calls. We all do way more than just work. Our lives are so multi-faceted and I'm truly delighted when I hear your 3-year-old impatiently ask for cheese sticks.
The government doesn't want you to know how much of your money they use to buy military equipment.
Great reporting by
@aremkus1
. Keep going after those records and information.
Now at Linn Park. One of the panels surrounding the monument has been removed. Around 25 protesters here. They’re al sitting around the monument. No action yet.
Overheard in the newsroom:
"The fridge will be cleaned out at 2:47 p.m. on Friday. I've got my eye on some good tupperware in there. We're running low at the house."
@OHnewsroom
“Today, a person with a college degree makes roughly the same amount as someone with only a high school education in 1989.” From
@JillFilipovic
‘s “OK Boomer.”
I want to throw this book across the room then pick it up and keep reading because I can’t look away.
Here's a novel idea: so people borrow money for college with the hope of maybe being able to live a comfortable life, but working wages have been stagnant for 30 years and the cost of living (& education) has ballooned. the student debt crisis ain't borrowers fault.

Tonight the Birmingham City School board is voting on two items to end two lease agreements with Church of the Highlands. COTH currently leases Parker High School and Woodlawn High School for Sunday services.
I’ll be reporting on what happens.
Sometimes I feel like I'm beating my head against a wall when I write about how purity culture and abstinence-only sex ed cause real harm, then I have people tell me my reporting helped them understand their anxiety around sexuality was rooted in purity culture.
Some *~personal news~*
You won’t be seeing my byline on
@aldotcom
. I’m now officially working for
@reckonsouth
and currently reporting on issues of money, finance and how millennials are figuring all that stuff out considering *gestures at everything*
This morning I cried as I read an email from a woman whose mother wouldn't take her to the gynecologist for pelvic pain for fear people would think she was having sex. She had endometriosis. She had to have a hysterectomy at 28. This is
#purityculture
in action.
Weird fact Friday: did you know a former Birmingham Zoo Director was a nudist and wanted to have an educational nudism program at the zoo? I stumbled across this while doing some other research today.
The city of Birmingham plans to place bids on the 2025 World Place and Fire Games and on the NCAA Men’s and Women’s basketball semifinals from 2023-2026. Story coming.
Literally a few hours before protesters went to the monument some of y’all were on here complaining about our “lack” of coverage. Then, after
@MadisonU
was attacked, y’all were on here saying “karma’s a b*tch” and implying we caused it. Lol go home and step on a lego.
The Birmingham City Council just approved an item that makes part of Avondale an entertainment district. If approved, Avondale will be the 4th entertainment district in Birmingham.
@richvillodas
TGC said this excerpt was from the first chapter. Did you not read the first chapter? I'm trying to understand the backtracking and all these comments against this from people who endorsed the book. Did you read it?
Since I'm working on a story about dress codes, and
#exposechristianschools
is trending, I wanted to share this lil snippet from the *current* student dress code philosophy outlined by the Christian school I attended.
So the city said members of the media are allowed to be on the streets past curfew so they could, you know, do their jobs. What happened to that Birmingham?
💫CALLING ALL ALABAMA WOMEN💫
Alabama Media Group is dedicating the entire A section of The Birmingham News, Huntsville Times and Mobile Press-Register to elevating women’s voices. We want to share your voice. (THREAD)
Pleasant Grove made history tonight. Three Black candidates were elected to the city council--something that's never happened in the city's 83-year history.
That was terrible. I'm glad my colleagues are okay. I'm okay. My nose is swollen and bleeding. My phone is gone. I'm thankful to the folks who dragged me out of there, who checked on me, who said nice things. Not sure why that went bad so quickly.
The Birmingham Housing Authority has ended its work with Church of the Highlands, citing recent controversy over Pastor Chris Hodges' social media activity.
Protestors in Birmingham, Alabama have moved a block away from the confederate monument and have burned an American flag that was hanging in a flagpole at the Promenade building.
So it's better for me to drown with a huge rock tied around my neck than for another student to be attracted to me?
Just like the students and parents I've interviewed about dress codes, I want school admins to understand what this does to a child's mind.
We got this, the Black National Anthem by
@thesherylralph
and Rhianna at the Super Bowl?
My musical and American heart has never been happier. Idk why y'all are so mad.
I'm still working on this
@reckonsouth
series on sex ed and
#purityculture
. I'm hoping to talk to men from the South about that. A lot of the writing and analysis of purity culture focuses on women, but I believe there's a story to be told about how it affects men.
DMs are open
My DMs are closed for now. I usually always keep an "open door" policy around here but I'm kinda tired of being told I'm going to rot in hell. DMs will be open again in the near future. Bear with me.
If you’re the praying type, pray for my in-laws. They were in a bad motorcycle accident tonight. My husband is on the way to Nashville to be with them. If you’re not the praying type, please think of my family tonight.
Y’all. I’m a little overwhelmed by the response to my column. For so long I thought I was just overthinking all this. I wasn’t overthinking it and neither were you.
Thank you to everyone who has reached out. We must keep talking about this.
This essentially said to me "I would rather you drown than for a boy to be attracted to/aroused by your appearance. Oh, and Jesus agrees with me."
This is why I'm still writing about dress codes and about
#purityculture
.
After I quoted
@AntheaButler
in my story about purity culture and racism in the context of the ATL shooting, I bought her new book "White Evangelical Racism." I've been reading it over the last few days.
Rep. Daniels says the bill makes it hard for him to defend Alabama, to tell people outside the state this isn't the Alabama they've read or heard about. "But we are."
If you only followed me because of my
#purityculture
column, I want you to know that sex isn't the only thing I yell about online.
I also yell about medical cannabis in the South and about millennial money problems. I've got a lotta stuff in the works for 2021 so stick around.
Hi all 👋🏼
You see a lot less of me at breaking news scenes at night. But don’t worry! I’m not going anywhere. Now I’m part of the Birmingham team at . I’ll be covering a variety of issues and happenings in Birmingham. Keep up with me here and on Snapchat!
Y'all, Helen Keller made it into Stranger Things. As a girl from the same small Alabama town of Tuscumbia as Helen Keller, I'm pretty proud. Also proud they didn't make jokes about her.
In the next 2 days, I’ll be moving into my HOUSE, which I BOUGHT with my millennial income. Like any good journalist, I’m using old newspapers to pack my dishes. This particular paper included the registered voter list. So, here’s your reminder to REGISTER TO VOTE.
Not to brag, but I think my beat of faith, sex and politics is crucial to the future of democracy. Whether I'm paid or not, I'm going to keep yelling about this.
This is truly, to me, what feels like God's work.

“If conservatives want to decrease abortion, there’s one way to do it, and that’s access to contraception. Banning abortion doesn’t eliminate abortion, but it’s been well-proven in many, many, many studies that increasing access to contraception decreases abortion.”
“I remember in high school just constantly feeling scared and like I had no idea what I was doing when it came to having safe sex. I hope each time I deliver a kit, it helps people feel like they’re not alone.”
Hello friends.

Something happier: People are devouring books about anti-racism. Local bookstores are sold out. Amazon is sold out. Books-A-Million is sold out. There's a 6 month waiting list for digital copies at the library.
Y'all read up & act on what you read, OK?
Happy New Year, Birmingham.
This tweet is for the millennials. I want to know what life in Birmingham is like for you. Where do you eat? Where do you live? Do you own or rent? What do you do for fun?
In 2020, I'll be looking at what life in Birmingham is like for millennials.
I posted this story just over a year ago. Let’s not forget that the “bad fruit” of Josh Duggar and the SBC sex abuse cover up came from the same tree: purity culture.
With the news today that Josh Duggar was sentenced to 12 years in prison for receiving child sexual abuse material, we're revisiting this piece about the excuses some folks use.
I’m proud to have won a Green Eyeshade Award for my reporting on racial representation in municipal elections in Pleasant Grove, Alabama. Thanks to
@krfaulk
for all his work editing my stories.
Was about to go to the grocery store then remembered the Alabama game hasn’t started yet, which means everyone and their mom is buying rotel and Velveeta. I’ll wait a few hours.
I’m running 50 miles this weekend, which means I’ll have about 13.5 hours (give or take) to listen to lots of podcasts. Drop your recommendations below 👇🏼
A patient was yelling at someone, then at me. I had a few options.
1) Call security.
2) Keep walking.
3) Go confront him.
4) Go find his nurse. (The RNs love this. But really. They don’t.)
5) Ask him what he needed.
You might have guessed I picked 5. Here’s what happened:
